My Favorite Fall Jacket

Top - Socialite / Jacket - J.Crew / Jeans (these are maternity!) - Old Navy / Booties - TOMS / Bag - Tory Burch

Okay so I know this jacket is super popular and that a field jacket is nothing new, but you guys, this particular jacket is the best. I mean, it's popular for a reason. I held off on buying it for a long time because I thought it was above my budget, but I'm so glad I finally caved during a sale last year.

What makes it so great? Well first, I love that it comes in a tall size, and that the tall size still has sleeves that are long enough for me to cuff! Let me tell you, as a tall person, I'm always jealous of all of the sleeve cuffing and pushing you short girls get to do. Little details like rolling a sleeve make your outfit look a little more intentional, planned and put together.

I also love the coating on the jacket. It makes it mostly waterproof, which is great for drizzly Chicago fall day. It also means if you spill something on yourself, it just rolls right on off. Oh, and it's surprisingly packable. I repeatedly shoved it in a backpack or suitcase while I was traveling last week, and it came out no worse for the wear.

And then the adjustable snaps at the waist are great too - they make the jacket flattering whether it's open or zipped up, and let me get a little more room when I wear a thick sweater. Or, you know, when this baby bump really starts to make its presence known.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale - First Glance Picks

Oh hey there, in case you somehow haven't heard the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale starts today for cardholders (apply here if you want to shop the sale early - otherwise full access starts on July 20th). There's always a ton of hype around the sale, but I wasn't too excited for it from looking at the catalogue. However, now that I'm able to see everything that's available, I'm getting really pumped for all of the basics, as well as seeing a lot of my favorites from the sale last year come back.

Nordstrom has free shipping and free returns with an unlimited return policy (I seriously saw a woman return a pair of boots she had bought five years ago on a card that was now expired, and they gave her a full refund!) so my recommendation is, if you see something you think you'd want, just buy it now since you can easily return it later. Last year I tried to budget and only ended up keeping a few things from the sale, and ended up going back and buying a lot of the basics from the sale later at full price.

So, onto the good stuff!! Let's start with bottoms. These leggings are my absolute favorite and I buy a new pair every year (come in plus sizes too) because they're so comfortable, have a long enough inseam for me, and don't fall down. I also grabbed these faux leather leggings last year and love them (worn here) - they're also available in a moto style. I also bought these jeans last year and love them, they're perfect if you carry a little more weight around your middle.

Okay, now it's on to sweaters! I'm clearly dying to add a pink cardigan to my closet - I already ordered this one ;) But really, the thing I would snag now would be a poncho sweater - I have a feeling this plaid one is going to sell out ASAP!!

There weren't a ton of coats and jackets that caught my eye, but if you've been loving the burgundy coat that I share all the time (including in our Paris photos!), there's a super similar one on sale now! This jacket is also really similar to the faux suede jacket I snagged last year (worn here). I'm also really strongly considering this zip-up casual jacket - Jeff has one like it and I was jealous of it all of last year!

OMG, shoes. Lol, did I wake up a little too early this morning? What I'm most exited about are sneakers in this sale, which may be a sign I'm getting old - how cute are these pink ones?! I'm also loving the idea of a waterproof boot for winter so I don't have to wear my snowboots every day like I did last year - either these heeled boots or the over the knee version.

As far as tops go, I'm mostly looking to stock up on tees like this one during the sale, but there are a few fun blouses out there too! I already have this tee in red (worn here), so I'm excited to see it in black and white stripes!

In case you aren't quite ready to shop for fall yet, there are a bunch of cute dresses included in the sale too - you know I'm loving this blue striped dress!

There weren't a ton of bags that caught my eye, but I have been wanting a new tote and the color of this one is gorgeous!!

Aaaaaand, we're done!! Here's hoping this post was helpful as you shop the sale - let me know what's your favorite!

The Four Jackets You Need for Fall

Does anyone else have a coat problem? ::raises hand::

When you look in my coat closet, I think there are about two empty hangers, four of Jeff's coats, and two hundred of mine. Okay, that may be a slight exaggeration, but it is basically exploding. The thing is, when you live in Chicago and have to go through our crazy weather patterns, it makes you feel like you need every coat under the sun.

Really though, there are only five coats you need this fall:

1. Raincoat
I went all through college and a few years living in Chicago without a raincoat, and really, I don't know how I survived. Rain in Chicago always seems to be blowing sideways, so unless you have an intense golf umbrella you're still getting wet. Enter the raincoat. Look for something lightweight so you can wear it in warm weather, and then layer up for chilly fall days.

2. Field Jacket
A field jacket is one of those coats that you can throw on over anything and look put together - your gym clothes, leggings and a tee shirt, or you know, your pajamas if need be :) I'm on the hunt for a new one because the jacket pictured above has some faux leather that sticks to my neck. I'm looking for a coat that is lightweight and cinches at the waist for a more flattering fit.

3. Denim Jacket
I have my fingers crossed right now that denim jackets stay in style forever, because they're another super versatile piece. I'm loving them right now over dresses for chilly fall mornings, or with joggers and sneakers for a little athleisure look.

4. Moto Jacket
Denim jackets and utility jackets are great because of their versatility, but when it comes to picking a coat for going out at night or for wearing to work, a moto jacket is your best bet. They toughen up anything you throw them over, and make you look instantly more pulled-together. For larger-chested gals like myself, look for an asymmetric cut - it's amazingly flattering!

So tell me - are you a fellow coat-addict? What's your favorite style?
