Blue & White on the Beach

Top (exact sold out, similar here and here) - LOFT / Shorts - J.Crew Factory / Bag - Clare V / Scarf (similar here) - Vera Bradley / Earrings (also available here) - BaubleBar / Sandals (similar here and here) - Old Navy

These pictures are really making me want to take another trip to the beach - anyone else?

I love going to the beach in Chicago, but it's so nice to go and stay right on the beach sometimes - it means you can visit all throughout the day. My favorite part of our trip to Florida was the morning Jeff and I got up early (okay, 7am ;) and headed out to take a walk down by the water. We basically had the whole beach to ourselves!

Whenever I take a beach trip, I basically pack all blue and white clothing. It's partially because all of my favorite clothes for summer are blue and white, and partially because it just makes packing that much easier - you just know that everything can mix and match!

I'm loving this top but this exact one is sold out. Here are a few similar blue and white options in case you have any beach trips coming up - or are just as in love with blue and white in the summer as me ;)

This Weekend...

This weekend I...

...took the train up to the suburbs with my dad after work on Friday (with train beers, of course ;) for a family dinner because my brother and his wife are in town! Something you might not know if you're newer over here is that my brother and his wife live in South Korea - he's a history teacher over there. They usually come back for a few weeks every summer. This one is a shorter visit than usual because my sister-in-law is actually expecting a baby this fall! Can't wait to meet my little niece or nephew!!
...went on a bridal shower and then part of the bachelorette party for my friend Marina from high school! Yep, all in one day ;) We started with mimosas and presents at 404 Wine Bar, and then moved downtown to Rock Bottom for drinks on the rooftop. I've been to Rock Bottom a ton of times with my family (we go every year on Black Friday, we've been going since I was in middle school!), but somehow have never made it up to the rooftop before - such a fun spot downtown!
...met up with Jeff for drinks and snacks (and all of the oysters) at Oyster Bah. This is the second time I've been and it somehow was even better this time than the first. I actually don't usually even like hush puppies and theirs are incredible. Plus it turns out they have an awesome happy hour, even on the weekend.
...went with a bunch of friends to Brews at the Zoo at the Lincoln Park Zoo for a bunch of craft beer and, of course, checking out all of the animals. I've been to the zoo's winter beer events and was kind of down on them, but this one was so much better! It probably helped that it wasn't below zero, but it also felt a lot more relaxed and less crowded since people could hang outside. Definitely check out some of their other events if you're looking for something fun to do this summer!
...packed it on up again for another trip - I'm leaving for San Francisco tomorrow. We have a big offsite for most of the week, and then I'm taking off early for a three day weekend with Jeff out in Napa to celebrate our wedding anniversary - bring on the wine!
...baked up a batch of my grandma's sugar cookies, which are basically my favorite cookie ever! Some of them are going in the freezer for the baby shower I'm throwing in two weeks, and the rest are in my suitcase to San Francisco today for a little baking competition with my coworkers out there - wish me luck!

Another Little White Dress

Dress (similar here and here) - Lilly Pulitzer / Bag - Clare V / Scarf (similar here and here) - Vera Bradley / Earrings (similar here too) - BaubleBar / Sandals (similar here, here, and here) - Sole Society / Bracelet - Michael Kors

My favorite little white dress made another appearance during our trip to the beach last week (previously seen here and here). I mean, is it even a beach trip if you don't wear a white dress?

Okay, yes, probably.

This white dress was actually one of many white pieces I brought to the beach because, well, it's the beach, but the only one of those white items that escaped the trip unscathed. My white shorts? Covered in dirt. My white tank? Attacked by my blush, and later by my rum drink. My white tee? Succumbed to some very melty mint chocolate chip. But the little white dress? Safe.

I feel like I just jinxed it.

2018 Chicago Summer Bucket List

Are you a bucket list kind of person?

I don't usually write out what I'd like to do each season, and my lack of organization leads me to forget to make time to visit a pumpkin patch every fall or to go sledding in the winter. So this summer, we're doing it. We're hitting all of the fun things to do in the city and not let the summer run away from us one weekend at a time.

Here's what's on my summer bucket list:

  1. Have a Chicago beach day at Montrose Beach
  2. Grab sausages and enjoy the rooftop at Gene's
  3. Host a Fourth of July party for our friends and family
  4. Take Jeff up to my hometown for hot dogs and ice cream at the lake
  5. Go for a walk or bike ride down the lakeshore path
  6. Spend an afternoon at a street fest
  7. Go to an outdoor concert at Ravinia or downtown in Millennium Park
  8. Host a dinner party out on our balcony
  9. Go on a weekend trip to the woods
  10. Wander down the river walk and grab a glass of rosé at City Winery
  11. Get out on a boat ride on the river or in the lake
  12. Go to (a bunch of) Cubs games
  13. Take a walk on the 606 trail
  14. Explore a new neighborhood in the city and find some great patios
  15. Have a picnic date at the giant park in our neighborhood

Oh, and obviously if this is truly a bucket list versus a to-do list, make a friend with a boat!! Hahaha, the ultimate goal right there ;)

Tell me - what's on your summer bucket list? Am I missing out on anything?

The Little Mermaid

Dress - J.Crew Factory / Sandals (fyi I love these - the perfect basic sandal, plus they're cushioned!!) - TKEES / Earrings (I also love this pair - how fun for the beach?!) - BaubleBar / Hat - J.Crew

Something you may not know about me? I freaking love the water. I grew up less than a mile from Lake Michigan and in the summer we were there all. the. time.

For those of you who haven't been to the Great Lakes, this isn't some wimpy little beach I'm talking about. Being at the beach in my hometown is seriously like being at the ocean - you know, minus the salt and the sharks. And usually minus a few degrees - that water is cold! But really, that never stopped me. I always ran right in.

Despite all of that beach time, I was never one to lay out for a long time. I don't know if you can tell just by looking at me, but I do not do sun very well ;) My sister actually doesn't have the patience to lay at all, I can do it a little these days (preferably under an umbrella, covered head to toe with SPF 70). But really? I'd rather be in the water!

This little trait of mine has now independently earned me the nickname "The Mermaid" with two different groups of people. I guess the red hair doesn't hurt ;)

This Weekend...

This weekend I...

...flew home after a week in Florida with Jeff's family! They've been going to the same spot for years now (like, I think they said 24?!) which is so cute. We swam in the ocean, we swam in the pool, some of us laid in the sun while others hid under an umbrella while wearing a sun shirt (umm meeeeee ;), and we helped some very enthusiastic six year olds try to catch all of the bunnies on the property (ahem, after I ensured them that I had definitely caught bunnies before and tried to teach them how to think like the bunny and be the bunny - ha). Our flight was really delayed coming home, but I ended up getting upgraded to first class so it wasn't all bad ;)
...literally dropped our bags and immediately turned around to head to a party that a bunch of our friends from out of town were visiting for. Hi Liana and Derek and Mal and Tom and baby Jimmy, it was so fun to see all of you!! We showed up a little late because of our flight, just in time to snag a couple of hot dogs, grab a glass of frosé, and enjoy a night up on our friend's deck.
...drove out to the burbs to see a little more of Jeff's family and celebrate my (almost) sister-in-law Kerry's graduation from business school! We did a little more grilling and tried to pretend like it wasn't 60 degrees and raining - oh Chicago.

And now today I'm flying out to San Francisco again for work - phew, exhausted just thinking about it!! I really don't know how people travel every week for work. This one is short, I'll be back Wednesday night, but I'm actually heading out for a whole week again next week. On the plus side, it gives me a reason to break out my new suitcase (which, yes, is just the larger size of my carry-on - look at this grown up with matching luggage!) and hopefully check out some fun new spots in San Fran. Any suggestions?
