Fall Work Style

Sweater Blazer (similar styles here and here) and Tee - J.Crew Factory / Jeans (these are maternity - perfect for first & second trimesters and the only maternity jeans I've liked so far) - Everly Grey / Loafers (or a tasseled version!) - Gentle Souls / Bag (I bought this in Paris!) - Sezane / Watch - Wristology

Work style isn't something I share a lot of here, especially now that I rarely dress up for work! But I have a big conference coming up next week so I've been thinking a bit about what to pack. I actually wore this exact combo to work a couple weeks ago when I had to give a big presentation, and felt perfectly put together and confident while still comfortable. Here's the pieces you need to pull it together:

I've always had a hard time with jackets, as most of them aren't quite cut right for my body type, and honestly traditional blazers usually aren't that comfortable! Enter the sweater blazer. I grabbed it on a whim when making some returns, and I am so happy I did! It adds the polish of a blazer, but the fit and comfort of a cardigan. Just a note that this one does have a full collar but no matter how much I try to press it down, it always ends up popping up a little like in these photos. This version is a little more expensive but looks like it wouldn't have the same problem, and this one with buttons is a cute option too.

Striped tee shirts are definitely the heroes of my wardrobe. They're just a little more detailed and fun than a plain tee, and seemingly go with everything - skirts, jackets, sweaters, vests, you name it! I love this one for the flattering fit and the slight boatneck that doesn't actually show my bra straps. Plus the sleeves are actually long enough for me! Definitely size up though, they tend to shrink a little in the wash.

Pro tip: Pull just a hint of your tee sleeve out of the bottom of the cardigan sleeves - it makes it look like you put a little more thought into your outfit and adds some fun detail.

If jeans are appropriate for your workplace, look for a pair that are dark wash with no holes or distressing. Skinny jeans are great, or boot cut/straight cut if you prefer those. Just avoid jeggings that really obviously look like jeggings - I'm talking skin-tight, slightly shiny, or missing pockets. If you can't get away with jeans at work, you can easily replace these with a pair of skinny dress pants

Comfy flats are a must for me at work - my feet are really sensitive and I typically can't get away with heels for more than a few hours, especially commuting to downtown Chicago! These have a cushy insole and are soft, comfortable leather. Plus the loafer style is polished but still fun for fall!

Add in a few accessories like a polished work tote and simple jewelry, and you're good to go!

In other news, it looks like fall is finally here! Jeff and I were dawdling before heading out to take these photos, and looked up at 7pm and realized it was already dusk!! If you look in the background of these photos you can see the yellow from the street lamps. Looking forward to fall weather over here, but definitely not to it getting dark so early!

Back in Blazers

Blazer (super similar) - J. Crew / Tee (similar) - Target / Jeans - Madewell / Bag - Sole Society / Flats - Michael Kors / Watch - Wristology / Earrings - BaubleBar

Whenever I get stuck in that rut of "not having anything to wear" (which obviously isn't true since my closet is completely full), I always fall back on an old standby - blazer + tee. It feels casual yet polished, dressed up yet still comfortable, which really, is like living the dream.

This Schoolboy blazer has been a favorite in my closet since I snagged it on clearance a couple of years ago. Unfortunately that clearance section meant that J. Crew was discontinuing this particular cut in favor of the Regent blazer, which I'm not in favor of because of the standing collar. No thank you! I've been looking for something similar, but hadn't had much luck. J. Crew Factory did release it's own Schoolboy blazer, which I tried on in stores and found to be a really similar cut and fabric as the original J.Crew version. Sadly it doesn't come in a tall though, so I'll have to keep relying on my old standby for now. Fingers crossed nothing happens to it!

And can we talk about these flats?! My mom actually bought them for me for Christmas, which is crazy because buying shoes for someone with as picky of feet as me is tricky business. These fit like a dream though, they were so comfortable right out of the box! I haven't tested them by walking a long way in them yet (mostly because I'm scared - they do feel like they might give a blister if I do some real city walking) but for day-to-day errands and heading to work they're perfect! I think the style is so pretty and polished too, even though my sister said they look like something my grandma would wear. Of course, my grandma is a pretty stylish lady, so maybe it wasn't a dig!

I've been loving pairing these flats with my brown (faux) leather watch. I don't like to go too matchy-matchy with my accessories, but matching the leather of two items always makes me feel a little more polished. I always try to toss in a third matching leather (like a bag or a belt) but it makes me feel a little too "ladies who lunch" or like I'm following outdated fashion rules. And you know me, I'm a rule breaker! Okay, that's not true. I'm definitely a rule follower. I don't even like to jaywalk ;)

More Stripes, More Blazers

Sweater (similar) - J. Crew Factory / Blazer (similar Factory version) - J. Crew / Jeans (similar) and Loafers (similar) - Madewell / Bag - Sole Society / Necklace (similar) - BaubleBar

I almost managed to forget that this blazer existed. Almost. I saw a couple of posts on Pinterest where girls were layering navy blazers over navy sweaters and loved the look so I had to pull the old blazer out again. I've been looking for the perfect navy sweater ever since, but I'm super picky with sweaters (sleeves too short! too thin! too itchy!) so I haven't found "the one" yet. Until it comes into my life I'll have to settle for this rugby striped option.

Settle is a weird thing to say though, because I freaking love this sweater. I love the stripes, I love that it's thick and cozy but not too hot, and I love that it has the little faux-layered chambray underneath. With the faux layer I can add a blazer and still be comfortable. I never understand how girls can actually layer more than two items, it makes me feel bulky and I always end up overheating. Of course, I overheat a lot. I'm that weirdo who hops on the subway and immediately rips off all of my outerwear, and then has to awkwardly hold it all in a large bundle while simultaneously trying not to fall down. Don't judge me.

Additional Blue & Pink Required

Shirt (similar) - LOFT / Skirt (similar and only $20!) - Ann Taylor Factory / Blazer (factory version) - J. Crew / Heels - Michael Kors / Necklace - c/o Happiness Boutique / Watch - Wristology

I hope you didn't think I was kidding when I said all I was planning on wearing for spring and summer was blue and white and pink, because seriously, that's all you'll be seeing around here for a while ;) I actually went and bought my niece another blue and white outfit with some pink embroidery (and two pink swimsuits - why are baby swimsuits so darn adorable?!) so we can match all summer long too haha.

Graphic Tee + Blazer

Tee (similar) and Blazer (similar) - J. Crew / Jeans (similar) - LOFT / Flats - BP / Bag - Old Navy / Earrings - BaubleBar

There's something about the combo of a tee and a blazer that always gets me - I love the mix of casual and dressy. Paired with some fancy flats and blinged-out earrings that I forgot to photograph (hand palm) and I was ready to party - I wore this to my cousin's surprise party last week. Combos that mix dressier and more casual pieces are perfect when you don't quite know what the dress code is - they help you feel appropriate in any situation. I could have worn this for a dinner date, running errands, or even work (because we don't have a dress code - I assume distressed jeans may not be okay in your workplace!).

In unrelated news, I keep getting requests for a tutorial for how I curl my hair - is that something you'd like to see?

Back in Blazers

Blazer (similar) - J. Crew / Tee (similar) - Target / Denim - Gap / Booties - Toms / Bag (similar) - Coach Factory / Bracelet - BaubleBar / Necklace - Madewell

I don't know what happened, but I think I forgot I owned any blazers. Which was clearly a mistake - they're so classic & flattering, plus they can take a simple tee shirt like this one feel like an outfit. Blazers can get expensive, but now is a good time to start looking for them. They tend to get super marked down as summer items come into stores. I bought mine on clearance a few springs back marked down to 75% off! I found a couple of similar blazers that are currently on sale and linked them below.
