Mean Girls Costumes

Last weekend was October 3rd, so of course there was a Mean Girls marathon on tv, reminding me of its greatness and of how much its lexicon has slipped into my daily life ("Boo, you whore"). So who wouldn't want to dress up as one of the Mean Girls for Halloween? I actually was in a group Mean Girls costume thrown together at the last minute for a costume party in college (I thought about finding some photos, and then I decided instead to destroy all of the evidence), and let me tell you, if you need a last minute Halloween costume, Mean Girls is a pretty easy one to pull off. Here are a few fun Mean Girls costume ideas:

Mean Girls costumes

Regina costume: Cardigan, Tank, Skirt, Heels
Damian costume: Sweatshirt, Sunglasses
Purple Bra costume: Skirt, Bra, Heels, Tank
Mouse costume: Dress, Mouse Ears (add a circle of pink felt to the centers if you're feeling DIY-y)

Would you dress up as a character from Mean Girls? Which is your favorite?

Oh, and completely unrelated - I finally joined Snapchat! I know I'm YEARS late on this. Now if I could only find a young person to show me how it works. You can follow me at kristinadoes. Stay tuned for amusing high school reunion pics this weekend!

Easy DIY Halloween Costume Ideas

I've shared a fair few Halloween costumes on the old blog over the years. It's definitely my favorite holiday even though I'm not so into the creepy elements - I really just love a good costume! Here's a roundup of a few of my favorites over the years:

This was one of those costumes that looked really complicated but was actually pretty easy to make. Plus, wearing a onesie all night was so comfortable!

Another fun and easy costume I put together at the last minute - thanks for lending me one of your shirts Jeff! Of course, those who were not Breakfast at Tiffany fans just thought I was a very confused Risky Business.

Now this is one of those costumes that looks easy but actually took me FOREVER since I hand drew all of the stripes. Maybe I should have tried fabric paint instead ;)

Want everyone to give you Halloween hugs? Dress up as a Carebear ;)

One cheapo nightgown plus one ribbon equals this easy Wendy costume - I had my friends dress up as Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, and Tigerlilly to match :)

Weekend Wars

Happy Friday everyone!  This weekend I've managed to schedule lots of eating activities and also my first 5k!  After the race I get to eat a lot of things dipped in chocolate, so technically it's on theme with the rest of my activities.  To those of you questioning whether or not it is my first 5k, yes, I technically participated in a 3.5 mile race earlier this year, which is almost a 5k.  But I failed to train properly and walked for parts of it, so I'm not going to count it.  I do what I want!

Seal dog and I wish you a happy and fun-filled weekend!

My Halloween Costume: Loofah!

This past weekend my friends and I dressed up as loofahs to hit the town for Halloween.  We followed the instructions posted by Razmataz, except added quite a few safety pins to spread out and fluff the netting up a little more.  This is a no sew costume that is quick and easy to make.  I also added a toiletry bag as a purse, and threw in a Bud Light for good measure.

We were concerned, being that we were down at the University of Illinois, that the combination of Homecoming and Halloween would cause the bars to be super crowded.  We were wrong, got to the bars obnoxiously early, and were the only ones in costume when we arrived.  What to do?  Put some Spice Girls and Gangnam Style on the jukebox and take over the dance floor.  I really mean "take over" because there wasn't much space for other people to dance with all that tulle in the way, although a few were brave enough to jump in the middle and get a scrub down.

What are you dressing up as for Halloween?  Will any of you be rocking your costumes in the office on Wednesday?

Five Minute Halloween Costumes

Halloween is right around the corner.  If you haven't come up with a costume yet, don't worry.  By combining a few items you already have in your closet, you can create a simple Halloween costume in 5 minutes or less!

A ninja is one of the easiest outfits out there.  Just tie a black scarf around your forehead and make a few ninja stars to throw around.  Origami ninja stars are really easy to make, find the instructions here.  Once you're dressed, sneak around and fight crime, ninja style.

To be a super hero, all you really need is a cape and a belt.  To make a quick and dirty cape, fold the dress just below the waist and pin it to your shoulders using safety pins with the top of the dress on the inside and the skirt of the dress on the outside.

Easy Costume: Wendy from Peter Pan

Last year my friends and I decided to come up with an easy group costume - Peter Pan.  I was Wendy, accompanied by Peter Pan and Tinkerbell.  It was a very odd love triangle.  Tiger Lilly also showed up at some point.

This costume ended up costing me about $10 total.  I found the light blue nightgown at Sears, and then added a ribbon at the waist and tied a ribbon around a curled ponytail.  It ended up being cold that night, so I made the outfit a little more "little girl" with white tights and a white peacoat.

Teaching Wendy how to fly: trickier in real life.

A Hint of Halloween

Yesterday I went out and bought the supplies for my Halloween costume, and I'm super excited about it!

Easy Costume: Carebear

So I love Halloween costumes.  Actually, all costumes.  I have a fairly impressive costume drawer when really I should be using that storage space for something else.

A few years ago I went to Madison for their big Halloween street party with my college roommates.  Knowing it was an outdoor event and it would probably be pretty cold, I wanted to come up with a warm and comfy costume.  Enter: the sweatsuit Carebear.

My roommate, the mad scientist.

I found the sweatsuit at Kmart for about $4 a piece.  I bought an extra sweatshirt to use for the hat.  I took an old white t-shirt and cut it into a large oval, and traced two hearts onto it.  I then hand stitched it onto the front of the sweatshirt, leaving two holes on either side to make a little pouch pocket.  For the hat, I used a beanie as an example and traced it onto the extra sweatshirt, adding on the two ears, then cut it out and sewed the two sides together.  Then I hand stitched on two white circles of fabric for the inside of the ears.

Finally, I colored a red heart onto the extra white fabric, cut it out, and sewed it onto the bottom.  Because I did a lot of hand stitching since I'm a crazy person and not that confident on my current sewing machine, this probably took me 3-4 hours to complete.  Super comfy, super warm, and everyone wanted to give me a hug.  Win.
