Ruffles, Blush, and Spring Diets

Blouse and Flats - Banana Republic / Denim - J. Crew / Bag - Sole Society / Necklace and Bracelet - BaubleBar

Oh hey there, happy Tuesday! I've been so into everything girly lately - you know, the holy trifecta of blush, ruffles, and sparkle. This top was basically a no-brainer when I saw it in stores, the ruffles are so cute and the structured fit is super flattering. I immediately wanted to pair it with all of the girly things in my closet, only to realize I didn't feel quite me. I have never been one to go completely lady-like with my style, so finding some balance was important. Adding in my new favorite pair of distressed denim was the perfect answer - it toughens up all of the sweetness just enough to make everything feel much more my style, plus makes it casual enough for a day of running errands in Chicago.

Not to completely change gears or anything, but I mentioned yesterday that Jeff and I are counting calories this month (well, really until we leave on our trip to Asia and then probably again once we get back), and I always get a lot of questions about calorie counting so I thought I'd go into a little more detail.

For me, spring is weirdly always the time I have the best luck losing weight (and fall is always the hardest!) I like to liken my body to that of an animal that hibernates - in the spring I'm done hibernating so my body is ready to shed some extra pounds no matter what I'm doing. Even when I wasn't dieting or exercising, I always would naturally lose a few pounds in March without trying (ahem, and usually gain those pounds back every fall). So now, I see every spring as a time to press a little reset button on healthy habits and try to get my body back into fighting shape by summer.

I've tried restrictive diets before but they never work for me, I'm just not very good at completely eliminating things from my diet. Sometimes a girl's just got to have a cookie, if you know what I'm saying. My doctor actually suggested that calorie counting might be the answer for me several years ago, and it turns out she was right! I use an app called LoseIt to track everything that I eat and my exercise every day. The app makes it super easy to track everything, and lets me plan ahead to make sure that the meals I'm planning will fit into my allotted calories for the day.

The app not only tracks everything I eat, but also tells me how many calories I'm allowed to eat. It calculates that by my height, starting weight, how many pounds I'd like to lose, and how fast I'd like to use them. Right now I'm eating about 1,300 calories a day, but the more I exercise the more I get to eat! I try to have days that are slightly higher and days that are slightly lower as well as have a cheat day on Saturdays. My personal trainer said that varying your daily calorie count is better for losing weight because a sustained low calorie diet could make your body think it's starving, which would stall any weight loss.

The tricky thing about counting calories is figuring out how many calories your meals are. It's a lot of guesswork, and you have to be okay with ambiguity. I always figure, as long as I'm close that's good enough! The other tricky thing is making sure that you put in everything you eat or drink, even if it's a single piece of candy. My co-worker says that whenever she uses a calorie tracker she'll skip putting things in and then laugh about how she's "tricking" the app - but really, just because the app doesn't know you had that latte doesn't mean your body won't know!

Calorie counting definitely isn't for everyone, but for me it works! The times I've really focused and followed the app correctly, I've been able to lose anywhere from ten to fifteen pounds over a two month period without changing my exercise plan. So the proof is in all of the pudding that I'm not allowed to eat ;) If you have any more questions about how it works, feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an email. I'm happy to share more about the process!

Summer Stripes

Shirt (similar) and Shorts (on sale for less than $30!) - J. Crew Factory / Bag - Sole Society / Watch - Wristology / Sandals - Dolce Vita / Necklace - Stella & Dot

My button downs are something I tend to ignore every summer, since they seem like a cooler-weather option. But with the sleeves rolled, an airy button down feels perfectly summery when paired with a pair of shorts. Of course, wearing this outfit on a 95 degree day with 90% humidity probably wasn't a great choice, but you know, you live and you learn. Jeff and I left the house this weekend with the intention of wandering the neighborhood and going to a cute little bar for a drink, and instead made it about two blocks and decided to go home and lay on the couch instead. Homebodies for life.

Do you wear button-downs in the summer?

Lace-Up Dress

Dress - LOFT / Sandals - Dolce Vita / Bag - Sole Society / Earrings - Charming Charlie / Bracelet - Baublebar

Every summer I hit a point where all I want to wear is dresses. Unfortunately when I reached that point last week, I looked in my closet and realized that just about all of my dresses are on the fancy side - appropriate for a work event or a wedding, but not really something I'd pull out for a casual day of wandering the city. I quickly rectified that problem over the weekend with a stop in at LOFT, and now have worn this dress multiple times this week. I maaaaay have a problem. I just love the swingy cut, and the fun lace-up detail means I don't need many accessories. Perfect for those hot summer days when it's too hot to plan an outfit!

Not Blue!

Dress (similar) - Gap / Jacket (similar) - J. Crew Factory / Booties (similar) and Bag - Sole Society / Earrings and Necklace (similar) - BaubleBar / Watch - Wristology

Look guys! It's not blue and pink, it's (gasp) gray and pink! Okay, unless you count the jean jacket, in which case it's still blue and pink :) I know I've been on a bit of a kick lately (exhibits one, two, three, and four) so I thought I'd show you something slightly different. I wore this last weekend (err was that already two weekends ago?) for Jeff's birthday/mother's day. The weather keeps toying with my emotions, so the sweatshirt material of this dress really came in handy. Luckily this Friday I'm heading to Elon, NC for my sister-in-law's graduation, then to Charlotte for a little weekend with Jeff, and then to the University of Tennessee for a week of volunteering with Destination Imagination, so there's a lot of warmer weather in my future! Actually, more like hot weather - it's supposed to hit 90 in Knoxville. As much as I complain about the weather in Chicago, I don't know how you southern gals do it. It was in the upper 80's in Atlanta last week and I was dying. If it could be 75 and sunny all the time that would be great - can someone hook that up for me?

Spring Stripes

Shirt - J. Crew Factory / Denim - Old Navy / Bag and Booties (similar) - Sole Society / Necklace - Stella & Dot / Bracelet - Michael Kors / Watch - Wristology

I procrastinated a little too long to take these photos until it was, in fact, raining, but I'm still way into this outfit. Stripes, white, distressed, and tassels? These are a few of my favorite things. I saw this shirt online while I was looking for items to link in a blog post last week, and now it's in my closet. I love a good popover and have been looking for one in light blue and white stripes ever since I rented this fun ruffled number in February. Paired with white denim and I'm ready for spring. You hear me Chicago? I said spring. Now, please.

All of the Tassels

Tee (similar) - Target / Scarf - LOFT / Denim - Gap / Booties (similar) - Sole Society / Bracelet - BaubleBar / Bag (similar) - Ann Taylor

How many tasseled items can I wear per outfit? Three? Oh okay, we're good then. Tassels are my current kryptonite - they keep finding their way home with me! Like this scarf. I walked into LOFT to make a return, and after standing next to it having to wait at least three minutes for a cashier (first world problems, amiright?!) I lost all willpower. Luckily I had one million LOFT Cash cards and a giftcard so it technically was free. Looks like I win this time.

Can we talk about this tee for a minute? I'm pretty sure it was about eight dollars when I bought it over three years ago, and I've worn it so many times that the cost per wear must be fractions of a cent. It somehow goes with everything, from fun skirts to floral blazers (Wait, do I not have any pics of this?? I swear I wear it all the time!) and everything inbetween. If you don't have a good gray tee, seriously, get one.

How's your week been going? Jeff left yesterday for a trip with the boys and one lonely girl for Wrestlemania (yes, you read that correctly) so I'll be flying solo the next few days. I see lots of sweatpants and Netflix in my future ;)
