Vacay Style

Dress (similarish here, here, here, and here) - Impeccable Pig / Sandals (another green pair, plus I love these studded mules!) - Ann Taylor / Bag (exact on Poshmark, super similar on sale!) - Kate Spade / Earrings (similar) - BP

Every now and then Chicago creeps its way into the 80's, and I decide I'm over this whole "spring" thing. Summer style all the way.

This dress was another purchase from our trip to Charleston, and I swear you guys, buying it was like being in a chic flick. I rarely shop in boutiques, I rarely go shopping in person at all, and I never ever ever enlist the shopping advice of the staff. But you know, it was my birthday, I had already had a cocktail, and everyone was just so darn friendly, including a women I swear followed us over after brunch. Plus Jeff was standing awkwardly in the front of the store reading sports tweets, so I felt like he needed to be involved. So let me tell you, I tried this dress on and strutted out into the store, and literally, women shrieked and told me I had to buy it. I may have twirled. It was like I was in a movie montage or something.

I hadn't gotten a chance to wear it since Charleston, but then, you know, Jeff's dad got married a couple weekends ago. On Cinco de Mayo. I dressed up for the ceremony but was told to go more casual for dinner that night, so fun and festive it was!

We have a bunch of trips coming up so I'm hoping to get the chance to pull this out again soon! Starting Labor Day weekend we have three trips in a row, with one weekend off in the middle during which I have a bridal shower and a baby shower and a bachelorette party to try to go to. That weekend my brother and his wifey are coming for a visit from South Korea too (they've lived there for four years now!). And I have back to back trips out to San Francisco for work mixed in too. Oh my gosh I might need a nap just thinking about that.

But luckily that means lots of chances to wear my fun vacay clothes! Which, let's be honest, are the best kind of clothes ;)

Off the Shoulder for Winter

Coat (similar and on salea hooded version, or a black version) - Marc New York / Sweater (just a few sizes left! A similar sweater is here) and Earrings (similar here and here) - J. Crew / Leggings (also available here) - Spanx / Booties - TOMS / Bag (similar splurge and save) - Old Navy

It's kind of funny, but every time I wear this sweater, I think it gets bigger. Back in Paris it fit like a normal sweater, and now I can't keep it on my shoulders! Not that I'm mad about it, since bare shoulders are like, totally in this winter ;)

I wore this downtown to see Beautiful with Jeff's family on Sunday. It's a little weird to be in the Loop on a weekend in winter - it's so empty - and was made even weirder by some incredibly thick fog. Can you see the buildings disappearing behind me?

I always try to dress up a little for the theater, and this was the sneaky perfect outfit for it. Looks dressy, but is as comfortable as can be! As a tall person, the theater is not always the most comfortable experience. Faux leather leggings for the win.

Speaking of these leggings, I actually thought before I bought them that they wouldn't be comfortable because the brand is Spanx. Definitely not the case! They're supportive and super flattering, but still really comfortable too. The price tag is definitely higher than I'd like to spend on leggings, but they're actually my favorite pair and I wear them all the time. So they may be more expensive, but that cost per wear is actually really low since they get so much use. As long as you can keep that cost per wear, you can justify those more expensive purchases.

Ruffles & Bare Shoulders

Dress (available at Macys and on Amazon! I also love this super similar verison that has adorable shoulder ties) - ASTR / Sandals - LOFT / Earrings (super similar) - BaubleBar / Bag (similar coral bag) - Coach

I actually hadn't worn this dress since we were in Asia (and maybe somehow managed to forget it was in my closet until I saw it was still available at Macys and on Amazon!) but was so excited to pull it out last weekend. I mean, I'm not always the girliest of girls, but it's hard to say no to some fun ruffles.

Of course, you know what the problem with wearing ruffles in Chicago is? Basically, they don't call it the windy city for nothing, and the ruffles repeatedly hit me in the face during our outdoor brunch. Le sigh.

Poms on Poms on Poms

Top - c/o Tobi / Shorts - J. Crew Factory / Sandals (super similar, I also love this block heel pair)  - Dolce Vita / Bag (similar neutral bag here, I also love this striped version and this bag that's less than $25!) - Sondra Roberts / Earrings - J. Crew

Where did the warm weather go? I wore this a couple weekends ago for a fun Saturday afternoon. (Is there a Saturday Funday equivalent? Or do we all just assume that all Saturdays are fun days?) I showed up and my friend pointed out that I was wearing all of the balls. Nothing like combining a little pom pom trim, more pom pom trim, giant pom earrings and a fun pom pom tassel! Obnoxious dressing at its finest ;)

I actually was expecting really warm weather this week because, as you read this, I'm already en route to Knoxville, Tennessee for the week. I go down there fairly regularly this week in the spring to volunteer with Destination Imagination, and usually it's hot. Like, sweating to death, hair a frizzy mess, lay in front of the air conditioner hot. Seriously, I don't know how you southern ladies do it, your average spring day is our hottest one in summer! Well anyway, it looks like it's going to actually be cool this week - we're talking low 70s / high 60s - what?! I won't know what to do with myself.

So what's my week of volunteering going to look like? I'm an appraiser (which is basically the nice way of saying you're a judge - instead of judging the kids I'm praising them ;) so I'll be watching and scoring hundreds of improvisation performances by kids from all over the world - I think there are 22 countries participating this year! Wish me luck - I'm going to need a looooot of sugar to get through this ;)

Some Deep Shoulder Action

Shirt and Sunglasses - c/o Tobi / Jeans - Old Navy / Sandals (similar here and here) - Dolce Vita / Bag (similar) - Coach / Earrings (similar) - BaubleBar

Sometimes it takes me a while to hop on trends, but this whole off the shoulder / one shoulder trend had me from the start. It took me a while to actually find a top that actually worked for my body type though - I need a piece that isn't too oversized on me. This striped blouse from Tobi is perfect, it's oversized but doesn't make it look like I'm wearing a tent. Plus, the sleeves stay down and it has cute blue and white stripes. Win win win.

So what's the key in looking for the best over the shoulder top for a busty gal? Find tops that either have a waistband built in, or go down a size. I'm wearing a large here even though the size guidelines dictated an extra large, which means the lower layer is cut much closer to my body. That means I have a shape! It doesn't matter for the top layer because it has an elastic band on the top so it's basically going to fit no matter what.

I wore this over the weekend for a little sushi dinner date with Jeff - yum! I used to only like rolls (preferably ones that were covered in eel sauce), but I recently started liking sashimi too, like a real grown-up haha. I don't need avocado to trick me into thinking I like raw fish anymore!

We actually went on a sushi date when we were in Hong Kong, which is maybe a little weird since we should have been chowing down on Chinese food. But, you know, Hong Kong is a really international city plus we figured though that it was waaaay closer to Japan than we've ever been before so the sushi had to be better there right? Um, let me tell you what, it definitely was! And I was pleased with my grown-up taste buds that allowed me to enjoy a freaking amazing bowl of sashimi and rice. Now I can't get that craving to go away. I think my favorite place for sushi in Chicago is Coast, but tell me, am I missing out? Is there a different sushi place I should check out? Let me know!

I'm super hungry right now, in case you couldn't tell - better jet!
