The Five Shoes You Need for Fall

Ugh, I know, I know, it's only August. I don't really want to be thinking about fall either. BUT, if you wait for the weather to change (as I have in years past) you're going to have some very unhappy feet when the rain and cool weather roll in. Today I'm sharing 5 pairs of shoes you need to get you through fall.

While I have many, many pairs of shoes in my closet, I tend to rely on a few basics to get me through the cooler months. Here are some of my favorites:

These booties are currently my holy grail shoe. They are so comfortable, can easily be dressed up or down, and basically go with everything. They've made it through two years in my closet now, and I don't anticipate them going anywhere soon! When you're looking for a pair of booties to wear everyday, make sure you get a pair with a comfortable heel height for you. The heel on this pair is just low enough that they're comfortable for everyday wear, but I usually go for an even lower heel. I also look for regular leather as opposed to suede, which will work better for all weather conditions. This pair also comes in a pretty medium brown.

Riding Boots

As much as I love a good pair of booties, sometimes it's just too cold for those exposed ankles. That's where riding boots come in. A good pair of riding boots is classic, and while they don't quite go with everything, they go with just about anything I want to wear on a daily basis. Sorry ballgowns. Look for a pair made out of real leather because it will wear beautifully, with a small heel for comfort, that has classic detailing that you'll be able to wear forever. I also love zip-up styles as opposed to pull-on, because they have a more flattering fit and are easier to put on with jeans.

I love having a fun pair of flats in my closet to switch things up every now and then. I'm still loving loafers, but lace-ups and mules are really fun right now too! I have this pair of mules that I wore basically all spring, and now I would love a pair in a more fall-appropriate color. They're so comfortable, and they're really easy to slip on and go!

Over-the-Knee Boots

I really apologize for posting a photo with snow in it - I know, it makes my heart hurt too. But you need these boots. They're incredibly stretchy and fit closely to your calves, they're insanely comfortable, and they stay up. Which, really, is the most important part. This pair is basically amazing and full of magical rainbows to do all of those things for that price. OTK boots are a super cute way to wear your dresses into fall, but also work really well over leggings or jeans. Plus, they're insanely warm in cold weather - it's like wearing a pair of pants over your pants! Oh, and I know I already said it, but this pair is the best. Don't even look anywhere else. I'm not even going to link up any other options. Just know they run about a half size large - size down!

Rain Boots

Okay, am I basically saying all that you need for fall is boots? But really, rain boots are different. I used to be a rain boot non-believer and marched everywhere in college in my trusty, rusty flats. And then I tried rain boots, and oh my gosh you guys, they made all the difference. Especially in the fall, when it can be wet and rainy and cold. Or just especially muddy in a pumpkin patch. But believe me, you definitely need some rain boots in your life!

So tell me, what are your essential shoes for fall??

Another Rainy Day

Shirt - J. Crew Factory / Jeans and Bag (similar) - Gap / Jacket (similar) - Michael Kors / Boots - Hunter / Necklace - Stella & Dot

How to improve a gloomy, rainy spring day? With white jeans and some bright red rain boots, of course!

It's been raining all.the.time lately (come on Chicago, you were supposed to be done with that in April!) and I'm trying everything to keep from collapsing in on myself like a dying star. And when I say that, I mean refusing to go outside and turning into a couch potato. So, white jeans and red rain boots it is.

I'm still out of town volunteering, so I'll keep this one short and sweet. Find me on Instagram (@kristinadoes) to see what I'm up to!

Rainy Days

Sweater (similar) - Banana Republic Factory / Denim (similar) - Madewell / Booties - Sperry / Necklace (similar) - BaubleBar / Watch - Wristology / Bag (similar) - Old Navy

I would be upset about all of the rainy days we've been having, except it means I finally get to break out my new Sperry boots! I snagged these waaaaaaay back at the last Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but they are so warm and cozy I haven't been able to pull them out much until now. I have this problem with winter(ish) boots - usually the super thick rubber ends up tearing the living daylights out of the back of my feet, no matter how long I try breaking them in, and then they get relegated to the back of my closet and are never worn. Not these babies! They are super comfy, with or without thick socks, and I found fit true to size. While these particular booties are sold out at a lot of stores, I found that Macy's still has a lot of sizing and colors (including an adorable plaid!) so you can still snag a pair before winter really hits.

What have you been up to lately? We're still up to our ears in boxes that need to be unpacked - I'm going to blame part of that on our procrastination skills, and part on the fact that we've been crazy busy with holiday stuff lately. Tonight we have another Christmas party to go to, and then tomorrow we're going to try to hit a friend's holiday improv show. Oh and I still haven't managed to wrap a single gift. Is Christmas really only a week away?!

What happened to the April showers bringing May flowers? It's supposed to stop raining now, come on Mother Nature! This weekend was about 50 degrees and rainy the whole time, so I reverted back to some of my fall staples - stripes, my utility jacket, and the Hunters.

I feel like I get asked all the time about my Hunters, whether they're worth the price, etc. The main differences between cheaper rain boots that I've seen is that they fit much closer to my calfs, which I like since it makes me look more streamlined, they get dirty looking faster because they're real rubber (it's called blooming, see my DIY post on how to clean them on the cheap), and they haven't yet sprung a leak (fingers crossed!). Every pair of rain boots I had in the past was in the $100 and under range, and none of them lasted more than a year. That alone seems to make them worth the price.

I bought my pair on the fly in the middle of a blizzard when my snow boots died (they were the only size/color available for basically any boot I could find, and I went to 3 or 4 different stores!) and while I love them, I'm kind of sad I didn't get another color - red would be so fun!
