Black and Blue

Happy Friday everyone!! Is it just me, or did this week feel loooong?  I had shortened weeks for almost all of December, so it was really tough coming back full time.

Top - JCrew Factory (similar here and here) / Pants - Gap (old, similar here and here) / Booties - BCBG (old, similar) / Bag - Unknown (similar here, here, here)

These pants are my new go-to party pants.  I actually originally purchased them a couple of years back when I had to wear dress pants to work every day (we've since gone casual - yessssss), but I recently rediscovered them as an alternative to leggings.  They have a similar look, but are a lot thicker than regular leggings (we're talking fully, 100% opaque) and can actually be worn with a shorter top without being scandalous.  I texted my sister while I was wearing them and said I was out at a party wearing dress pants, and I believe her return text was "WHO ARE YOU??"

This week I'm excited to be co-hosting the Fab Favorites link up with Style Elixir and The Grits Blog.  Be sure to follow these other lovely ladies and join the link up below!

Moroccan Cooking - Zaalouk Salad

Remember my trip to Morocco?  I keep dreaming of going back.  It doesn't help that it keeps showing up on lists of the top places to visit.  I've even started trying my hand at Moroccan food.  My favorite thing about Moroccan food was that every meal started with a bunch of different little salads (kind of like Korean food, but not quite as many dishes).  I had a hard time not filling up on the salads before our main course came (and often failed), but I guess it's better than the American tradition of filling up on bread.

I mentioned here that while we were in Morocco we went on a cooking tour, which actually ended up being my favorite part of the trip.  The tour started with someone taking us through the markets to buy a bunch of ingredients, sample some things, and get a general feel for the crazy twisting streets.  My job was to be the keeper of the money, or the "lalafleuse" as our guide kept calling me (I think it's Dutch?), so while bargaining is not a thing in the food markets, I was supposed to make sure we were getting the right amount back each time.  We also did a bit of sampling, tasted tons of different kinds of herbs and a couple of fruits I've never seen before, as well as saw the sights of the market, including one man who hangs a goat head in his shop every day specifically to attract tourists and a spice/medicine shop that also sold animal hides. After our adventure in the markets, we went back to our guide's house to cook a gigantic lunch and sip on mint tea. It included a ton of different salads, couscous, and some sardines (made by me!).  And then I had to take a nap, we ate so much.

My absolute favorite of the salads is called zaalouk, and is made of fried eggplant mixed with cooked tomatoes and some other yummy things.  It was sort of surprising, given that I don't normally like eggplant, but they kept calling the eggplants "aubergines" (crazy Europeans) so maybe I was never exactly sure what I was eating.  I could seriously eat zaalouk every day, on veggies, on pita bread, or just by itself.  Seriously, it's my new hummus.

Zaalouk
1 eggplant
4 tomatoes
1/2 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
1/2 tablespoon fresh coriander, finely chopped
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground paprika
pinch of chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 cloves of garlic, crushed
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon vinegar
vegetable oil

Cut the eggplant into slices and place them in a bowl of salted water.  Chop the tomatoes.  Put them in a pan with the parsley, coriander, all of the spices, salt, garlic, and olive oil.  Simmer until dry (about 5-7 minutes).  While the tomatoes simmer, drain the eggplant and pat dry.  Fry the eggplant in vegetable oil until golden brown.  Add the eggplant to a food processor and puree.  Add the eggplant to the tomato mixture and stir well.  Add the vinegar and simmer for 5 minutes.  Serve warm or cold with veggies, pita chips, or pita bread for dipping.

And then eat it all!

Baby, It's Cold Outside...

... and inside too!  Our heater apparently can't go above 55 degrees in this weather.  Blankets are my new best friends.

I can't muster up the energy for a real post, but I wanted to share this from Buzzfeed - just because everyone's throwing boiling water into the air doesn't mean you should too!

Stay warm out (and in) there!

Snow Day

Sweater - Old Navy / Skirt - JCrew / Booties - Kelly & Katie (old) / Necklace - Loft (old) / Bracelet - Baublebar

These pictures are from last week, when the snow was only just starting to fall.  Now there's at least a foot out there.  So it doesn't look that bad in the pictures, but it practically a blizzard at the time.  If our neighbors didn't think I was crazy before, they definitely do now.  While I was out there, our front gate blew shut and locked me out, so I had to crawl through my neighbor's yard to get back in.  Luckily, it turns out this skirt (that I was lusting after all winter) and sweater (a Christmas gift from my sister) are surprisingly warm so I didn't suffer from hypothermia.  Although they're certainly not the best for creeping through the snow...

This weekend...

This weekend I...

Hibernated.  Seriously.  We only went out for about three hours total to meet some friends for dinner.  Oh, and I took a picture of my hair (looooooove my new curling wand).  Weekends full of movies and pj's and cuddling are the best.  Today I get additional pj's since my office decided on mandatory work from home thanks to the polar whatever.  Stay warm, people!

Sponsored Post: GlassesUSA

I still remember how excited I was to get my first pair of eyeglasses.  I was nine, and I picked a rocking pair of pink and purple frames.

What I didn't realize when picking those glasses was that glasses are freaking expensive, and that my mom was going to make me wear them for the next four years.  Twelve year old me was a little less psyched about wearing them every day.

Since then, I've always gone much more conservative in my frame choice, knowing that I'd have to wear them for a couple of years.  That is, until online glasses shopping became a thing and I could buy glasses whenever I wanted.

Have you heard of GlassesUSA.com?  They offer a huge selection of fancy frames at prices that even my mom would approve of.  Here are a few of the glasses I have my eye on (apparently I have a type ;):

GlassesUSA also has a Virtual Mirror tool that lets you try on glasses before you purchase them.  Check it out below:

Have you ever bought eyeglasses online?  If not, you're definitely missing out.  Luckily, GlassesUSA has two special offers for KDTI readers:
  • Take 15% off + get free shipping on your entire order (orders over $50). Code: FS15
  • Take 10% off any order of prescription glasses. Code: Blog10
This post is sponsored by GlassesUSA, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Happy New Year!

I hope you had a very happy New Year!  After a nice long break, I'm happy to be back blogging.  Since I've been gone, I...

... Spent NYE at a party with a bunch of our friends, but sadly then spent over an hour trying to get home via public transit.
... Checked out a blow dry bar for the first time - thought they did a really good job, but I seem to get more staying power when I curl my hair myself.
... Ate my weight in cookies and candy, and then skipped a couple of gym appointments, whoopsies!
... Spent a ton of time with both my and Jeff's families, including dual Christmas morning present openings.
... Took care of my parent's dog for a couple of days, she wasn't doing so good (couldn't get up on her own!) but now is on some meds that dramatically improved her health.
... Went shopping several times but only managed to buy a six dollar tee, despite all of the Christmas cash burning a hole in my pocket.
... Sang "twin bed" on repeat at a super classy family dinner.
... Watched the Illini play in Chicago and made it on TV a couple of times.
... Went to see American Hustle and The Hobbit, and learned that you shouldn't put metal in the science oven.
... Spent a whole lot of time relaxing in my pj's, the way a successful Christmas break should be spent.

I hope you had a good one!
