The Little Mermaid

Dress - J.Crew Factory / Sandals (fyi I love these - the perfect basic sandal, plus they're cushioned!!) - TKEES / Earrings (I also love this pair - how fun for the beach?!) - BaubleBar / Hat - J.Crew

Something you may not know about me? I freaking love the water. I grew up less than a mile from Lake Michigan and in the summer we were there all. the. time.

For those of you who haven't been to the Great Lakes, this isn't some wimpy little beach I'm talking about. Being at the beach in my hometown is seriously like being at the ocean - you know, minus the salt and the sharks. And usually minus a few degrees - that water is cold! But really, that never stopped me. I always ran right in.

Despite all of that beach time, I was never one to lay out for a long time. I don't know if you can tell just by looking at me, but I do not do sun very well ;) My sister actually doesn't have the patience to lay at all, I can do it a little these days (preferably under an umbrella, covered head to toe with SPF 70). But really? I'd rather be in the water!

This little trait of mine has now independently earned me the nickname "The Mermaid" with two different groups of people. I guess the red hair doesn't hurt ;)

This Weekend...

This weekend I...

...flew home after a week in Florida with Jeff's family! They've been going to the same spot for years now (like, I think they said 24?!) which is so cute. We swam in the ocean, we swam in the pool, some of us laid in the sun while others hid under an umbrella while wearing a sun shirt (umm meeeeee ;), and we helped some very enthusiastic six year olds try to catch all of the bunnies on the property (ahem, after I ensured them that I had definitely caught bunnies before and tried to teach them how to think like the bunny and be the bunny - ha). Our flight was really delayed coming home, but I ended up getting upgraded to first class so it wasn't all bad ;)
...literally dropped our bags and immediately turned around to head to a party that a bunch of our friends from out of town were visiting for. Hi Liana and Derek and Mal and Tom and baby Jimmy, it was so fun to see all of you!! We showed up a little late because of our flight, just in time to snag a couple of hot dogs, grab a glass of frosé, and enjoy a night up on our friend's deck.
...drove out to the burbs to see a little more of Jeff's family and celebrate my (almost) sister-in-law Kerry's graduation from business school! We did a little more grilling and tried to pretend like it wasn't 60 degrees and raining - oh Chicago.

And now today I'm flying out to San Francisco again for work - phew, exhausted just thinking about it!! I really don't know how people travel every week for work. This one is short, I'll be back Wednesday night, but I'm actually heading out for a whole week again next week. On the plus side, it gives me a reason to break out my new suitcase (which, yes, is just the larger size of my carry-on - look at this grown up with matching luggage!) and hopefully check out some fun new spots in San Fran. Any suggestions?

Little Chambray Dress

Dress - J. Crew Factory / Bag (also available here or in black, or a budget-friendly option) - Clare V / Sandals (similar here and here, I also love these statement sandals) - Sole Society / Earrings (also available here) - BaubleBar / Sunglasses - Loft

Sometimes you go on vacation, and you go wine tasting, and then when you're getting ready to leave you remember you meant to take photos and now you have to take slightly tipsy photos in direct sunlight, without vineyards in the background.

Not that I'm saying that's what happened here.

But you guys, I was such a hater on the whole Michigan wine thing. I mocked it, kind of to a lot of people. I'm just not a sweet wine person, and I really thought that was what all Michigan wine was. So you can say that I was less than excited to  go wine tasting over the weekend. Well that's not really the right way to put it. I mean, I'm always excited to drink wine. I just didn't view Michigan wine tasting as one of my must-do activities.

Okay, okay, okay, turns out I was wrong. It turns out Michigan makes some great wines! We went to Dablon Winery one afternoon and managed to squeeze in next to a giant bachelorette party at the bar to try a few. They actually had a huge selection (not sure how they manage that?) so you got to pick which wines you wanted to try, and I actually liked everything except, oddly enough, their rosé!

After tasting at the bar we decided we wanted to hang out on their beautiful patio for a while so we grabbed a bunch of cheeses and meats and crackers along with a couple of bottles of wine. I really am sad we couldn't get photos in front of the vineyards (the light was just coming from the wrong angle) because it really was so beautiful. On the drive home from the weekend, we were all talking about our favorite parts of the trip, and we all agreed that afternoon out on the patio was the best.

What Books Are You Reading?

As we move into summer (please? maybe? please?) it means it's beach reading season! I personally love nothing more than curling up on a chaise near the pool (ahem: under a beach umbrella, still wearing a rash guard and a hat) and reading a good book. Or heck, a really terrible book ;)

The first trip I took with Jeff's family was to the beach in Florida with them for the week, and I neglected to pick out some paperbacks ahead of time and ended up grabbing The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls at the airport bookstore. It was super trashy but enjoyable, and I told Jeff's mom I loved it and she had to read it. Before I got more than ten pages in and discovered a major theme was kissing cousins. Oops. She asked to borrow it when I was done and I had to pretend I had lost it.

To avoid embarrassing myself, this year I made sure to stock up on some paperbacks ahead of time. I'm super excited to read The Female Persuasion (the latest by Meg Wolitzer - did anyone else love The Interestings??), Educated, and Atonement, and pretending I'm not excited but definitely am psyched for a little YA action with The Thousandth Floor.

I loved Life After Life, and A God In Ruins is the companion novel - they run at the same time from different points of view.

In case you're on the hunt for some recommendations, here are some books I've read lately that I loved:

Rules of Civility - If you loved A Gentleman in Moscow, this is another novel by the same author. I actually didn't realize it when I started reading the book and was somehow able to guess they were written by the same person. The story follows a woman in New York in the years leading up to World War II and how her life changes after a chance encounter with a handsome millionaire. It sounds like a beach read, but it really is a lot more substantial than that.

Little Fires Everywhere - This story opens with the Richardson's family home on fire, and then dives back through the seemingly perfect lives of their four teenage children over the previous year to see how the arrival of a new girl in town causes their family to fall apart. This was a fast read but so much more than your typical beach book.

Manhattan Beach - By the same author as A Visit from the Goon Squad, this book weaves together a coming of age story about a young woman in New York City during World War II, a mystery about the disappearance of her father after he starts working for the wrong people, and the life of a glamourous nightclub owner with ties to the mob. I really felt submerged into the world of NYC in the '40s, and the driving force of the storytelling combined with the beauty of the writing made this novel hard to put down.

The Identicals - Now here's a true beach read! This story follows the life of identical twin sisters living so close but so far from each other: one on Martha's Vineyard, the other on Nantucket. Just like the islands, they look alike at first glance but are completely different below the surface. Until, that is, circumstances cause them to change places for the summer. This is definitely a great easy read for the summer!

Do you have any favorite books you've read lately?

Easy Vacation Style

Dress (I also love this one and this one) - J. Crew Factory / Bag (or a budget-friendly version) - Clare V / Necklace (similar here) - BP / Sandals - Target

What kind of vacation style do you have?

I often have plans for elaborate outfits and fun accessories, but at the end of the day, I tend to just want to wear something easy and comfortable. I mean heck, after the second day I've usually given up on makeup and doing anything to my hair besides combing it after I shower, so I certainly can't put a lot of time into what I'm going to wear.

That's where easy pieces like this dress come in. I wore this for our drive up to Michigan on Friday and then out to dinner that night, and I managed to look and feel appropriate for both. I mean, the dress is super, super comfortable, yet structured enough to be flattering. Plus the sleeves. I mean, the sleeves.

I added in a few simple accessories, including these sandals I'm loving from Target. They have a cushioned bottom (which is basically the only way I'm doing sandals from now on because #oldladyprobs) and seemingly go with everything. And they're perfect for vacation, because the slip on style means I can toss them on to run out into the yard to look at a deer (yes, there were many deer in this yard!) or kick them off to run on the beach, no straps or ties to mess with. Oh, and did I mention they're only $12.99?! Target for the win.

I mean, not like Target is ever not for the win.
