Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Oh hey there, did you realize Mother's Day is right on the horizon? I did oh, about yesterday, and then proceeded to make plans with the special mama in my life and buy a bunch of presents. So now I'm basically set. Unfortunately, Jeff's birthday actually comes before Mother's Day, and I haven't figured out anything for him yet. What can I say, shopping for my mom is so much more fun than trying to figure out what sports memorabilia or country music concert tickets Jeff would want. I'll take looking at jewelry and candles any day!

When it comes to shopping for Mother's Day, I always tend to look for pretty little things that my mom would never think to buy for herself, so she can treat every day like it's Treat Yo Self 2011. Here are a few of my picks (and don't worry Mom, your actual presents are not included - no spoilers!!):

Last Minute Gift Ideas

Have you been procrastinating on your gift buying this year? Every year I find most of my gifts pretty fast, but then stall on the last few and end up in a panic trying to get everything on time. This year I really struggled with Jeff, I finally ordered it and his gift is juuuuuust supposed to make it on time.

Luckily, if you aren't finished shopping yet and don't want to brave the mall, some stores offer free two-day shipping, like Nordstrom, Amazon (if you have Prime that is!), and Zappos. So really, tomorrow is your last day to order if you want to get delivery by Christmas Eve - better jump on it! Here are a few of my last-minute gift ideas:

If you're looking for more gift ideas, here are stocking stuffers, gifts for the hostess, gifts for the mixologist, gifts for the couch potato, and gifts for him.

Gift Guide: Stocking Stuffers

Stocking stuffers are always my favorite things to find - cute little things are the best! I just got these mini tassel earrings (in pink!) and seriously love them. I have a problem with earrings that are too heavy, but I barely noticed these ones. I also love little beauty items, like my favorite hand cream and lip balm. I also have been weirdly into socks lately - patterns are so much more fun than plain white or black!

National Hot Cocoa Day

I'm not usually one to celebrate a "day" since there's basically a day for everything these days - pizza, socks, the Dewey Decimal system...

But I mean, hot cocoa?! Who can say no to that? Any excuse for drinking hot melty chocolate covered in marshmallows I'm definitely down for.

I don't drink coffee or tea but still love a hot drink now or then, and hot chocolate is my go-to. Unless I'm in with co-workers and don't want to be mistaken for a small child in the morning when they're all ordering espressos, in which case I go for the good old fashioned chai latte ;) "Kids temperature hot chocolate" just doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well.

A few years ago I got a jar of fancy hot cocoa mix in a gift exchange, and to date it's probably one of the best gifts I've gotten in one of those. I found some adorable jars with rose gold hardware in the dollar section at Target last month, and decided to put together a jar of my own to put into a couple of white elephants this year.

The gift itself is super easy. Once you find a cute jar, fill it up halfway with cocoa mix, then add layers of chocolate chips (I went with milk chocolate Ghirardelli chips - yum!!), mini candy canes, and of course marshmallows! Paired with a cute mug (I found this one at Walgreens - no, seriously! Isn't it cute?!) or a bottle of Baileys or RumChata and you've got yourself the perfect gift!

So tell me, what kind of gift do you usually put into a gift exchange?

Gift Guide: for the Hostess

Oh hey there, looks like it's time for another gift guide! Can you believe we're only two and a half weeks from Christmas?! This week I went after hostess gifts, which are some of my favorites because they're things people don't typically think to buy for themselves or won't splurge on. My favorite of course is this Nest candle, it smells freaking amazing! I tried buying a couple of cheaper Christmas candles but the scents don't permeate the way that the Nest one does - this seriously fills my house!

Gift Guide: for the Mixologist

Who doesn't love a good cocktail, amiright? Or, you know, at least a cute glass to drink out of ;) But seriously, gifts that relate to drinking are perfect for coworkers, gift exchanges, or when you're looking for something to bring to a dinner party in addition to a bottle of wine. Yes way, rose!

Gift Guide for the Guy Who "Doesn't Need Anything"

I always have a hard time shopping for the men in my life, mostly because they always say they don't need or want anything! Seriously, the closest my dad has gotten to telling me what he wants for Christmas is, "maybe some tools," which led me to the gift card section at the Home Depot. Very creative. Jeff rarely gives me any ideas either, but has generally loved the gifts I've given him. I got him a little Bose speaker for his birthday last year, and he loved it so much we ended up buying a second one to keep in the kitchen. I've always thought certain "man gifts" were lame, like dopp kits, but it turns out that they're that thing your boyfriend or husband will never think to buy for himself but will love and use all the time.

Gift Guide for the Couch Potato

You guys, is it really time for gift guides already?! I actually bought my first gift of the year this week (!!!) so yeah, I guess it is! I've shied away from doing a ton of gift guides in the past because there are so many out there, but they're actually some of my favorite things to read so this year I decided to go for it! If I'm properly motivated, you can expect a gift guide for a different important person in your life every Wednesday through Christmas. So, let's start with the very most important person: the couch potato.

We all have that person in our life who loves staying in and getting cozy - okay, you got me, that person is actually me haha. Give me some comfy slippers, a candle, and a Netflix subscription and I am a happy camper. Lately I've been binging old episodes of Gilmore Girls - is anyone else so excited for the new episodes?! I know what I'll be doing the weekend after Thanksgiving ;)

Anniversary Gifts

This post is sponsored by Uncommon Goods. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A couple of weeks ago Jeff and I remembered it was our dating anniversary, and now we're somehow only two months away from our first wedding anniversary! (Psst want to see the million wedding photos I posted? You can see them all again here). I understandably have anniversary presents on the brain. Of course, we decided our roof deck will be our present to each other (err, it may also have been our Christmas present to each other...) but that doesn't mean I can't get him something small, right? Don't worry, I'll tell him I'm getting him something small and not buy a present for him and expect that he'll think to get me a present and then be all mad when he doesn't ;)

I feel like at this point in our relationship I've gone through all of the regular gifts for a man, like a watch, computer bag, clothes, a dopp kit, drinking accessories, grill accessories... I was looking for something different, and that's when Uncommon Goods stepped in. Uncommon Goods offers fun and different items you won't find anywhere else, like jewelry, designer decor, tabletop items, and unique gifts. Gifts for men are always super hard so it's great to have Uncommon Goods as a resource when my brain goes totally blank. They also offer a whole range of personalized gifts (find them here) that are so much more than a monogram, like art, kitchen items, this super adorable wedding bowl. On top of that they also care about giving back - through their Better to Give program Uncommon Goods donates $1 to the non-profit of your choice. Since they started the Better to Give program 12 years ago, Uncommon Goods has donated over $1Million to charities around the world!

So anyways, on to what I picked out for Jeff! I know that the first anniversary is supposed to be paper (ahem, only because I read Gone Girl, which is a particularly weird reason) but wood is like, pre-paper, amiright? These Chicago "Neighborwoods" coasters and wall decor are so adorable I'm definitely saying that yes, they count ;) I mean the little Lake Michigan one? Dying. And, you know, Jeff loves them, which is really the most important thing. The coasters and wall decor also come in sets for a bunch of other cities in the U.S. and Europe (the European coasters are here) so you can find a set that's special for you. If I picked a second set I would definitely go for Rome - it's where we went on our honeymoon!

Mother's Day Gifts

I'm not sure how it happened, but Mother's Day is only two and a half weeks away! I'm sure you would argue that your mom is the best, but seriously, my mom is the best, so I like to spoil her a little for Mother's Day. My mom is always putting others in front of herself, so I like to look for little luxuries that she would never think to spend money on for herself, like pretty jewelry, a nice candle, or fancy beauty products. Happy almost Mother's Day Mom!

KDTI Holiday Gift Guide

Hey you guys! I found some gifts to share that aren't all gold! I mean, some of them are gold, but how was I supposed to put together a gift guide that didn't include gold?! Here are my top picks for this year:

How is your holiday gift shopping going? I'm about halfway done, which really means that I'm basically all done but will end up having to buy the gifts for Jeff's family because he'll have forgotten. Le sigh. At least I know it'll happen every year, just like I know that anytime I show up at my parent's house on Christmas Eve my dad will inevitably have a stack of presents he still needs wrapped.

Valentine's Day Gifts for Him (Part Deux)

Gifts for guys can be hard, no matter what the occasion is.  This year, Jeff and I decided not to do Valentine's Day gifts (you know, cause my birthday is two weeks later so I still get presents ;) but since my last Valentine's Day Gifts post was so popular, I thought I'd update it for this year.

Scarf: Because he definitely needs one, but he's never going to buy one for himself.
Multi Bar Tool: Ummm, because it's the coolest.
Book: My almost father-in-law got this for Christmas and it's hysterical - all of the tips and tricks you need to know to achieve the art of manliness.
Krups Beertender: What guy doesn't want fresh beer on tap all the time?  Just make sure you know your guy likes Amstel/Heineken/Newcastle, since those are the only kinds of beer that can be used with this.
Moscow Mule Mugs: Moscow Mules are everywhere these days, and this way you can buy the glasses outright instead of putting down a $30 deposit at the bar and then walking out with one.
Funny Mug: So he can think of you every time he gets his caffeine jolt.
Silly Boxers: Just because it's 2014 doesn't mean he still won't need a pair of these.
Fancy Man Bag: So that he has something nice to bring on weekend trips, other than his backpack from college.

What are you getting your guy for Valentine's Day?  Or are you skipping presents this year too?

Valentine's Day Gifts For Him

1. Jambox by Jawbone: A speaker that connects wirelessly to his iPhone, because boys like anything that's wireless.
2. Mini Robot Vacuum: He loves robots.  You love when he cleans up his crumbs.  This tabletop vacuum does both!
3. Polo: A red polo says "Valentine's Day" without screaming, and it saves him a shopping trip.
4. Ron Swanson Card: This printable from Etsy tells him exactly how you feel.
5. Apple TV: Wirelessly connects all of your Apple products to your TV.  Man approved by my boy, he was super excited when I got one for him.
6. Archer Season 3: Because what says "romance" more than a dead fiance coming back as a murdering cyborg?
7. Heart Boxers: Super cute, and since he never shops he'll probably actually wear them.  Of course, if hearts are a little too girly for your boy, try some red plaid shorts instead.
8. Rapid Beverage Chiller: This little guy chills a can of beer 40x faster than in the freezer.  Added bonus: it also fits a bottle of wine.
9.  Homemade cookies: truly the key to a man's heart ;)

What are you getting your guy for Valentine's Day?

Wanted: Pretty Little Things

For some reason I never manage to buy pretty things for my apartment.  I look at them, I lust over them, but I always feel like I should spend my hard earned dollar bills on more practical things (you know, like four million pairs of shoes).  That's why this year I'm asking for pretty little things on my Christmas list.  Oh, also, apparently white and metallic are having a major moment in my life right now.

Giving Cash as a Gift

I usually hate giving cash as a gift.  I know a lot of people like receiving cash (umm, including me!) but giving it always feels like a cop-out to me - like I couldn't be bothered to think of a gift for you.

That is, unless I find a way to give cash in an amusing or creative way.  My brother sent out a list for his birthday, and about half of the things he asked for were cash designated for specific things he wanted, like brewing beer and buying a new computer.  I thought to myself, those are noble causes.  Perhaps I should contribute.

I saw this on Pinterest and thought it was cute but maybe a little cheesy for my older brother:

But you know what isn't too cheesy for your older brother?  Beer.  Wrapped in money that's designated for making beer.

Failure of a blogger that I am, I neglected to get pictures of the whole process.  However, I'm sure it's pretty easy to fill in the blanks.

Step one: tape a whole lotta dollar bills together.  The more singles you have, the better.  After I went to get to the bank to change some twenties into singles, I felt like I was headed to (or perhaps from) the strip club every time I opened my wallet.

Since you want the recipient to be able to spend these at some point, don't go too crazy with the tape!  I just put two little pieces on either end, just enough to keep them together.

Step two: obtain some nice beers that come in a handy cardboard carrying case.  I went with Goose Island Pere Jacques since I knew it was one of my brother's favorites, but you could choose this kind if you prefer:

Step three: remove the bottles from the cardboard container.  Take a looksie at your box and eyeball approximately where the base of the bottle would hang out if it were still inside of the container.  Slice a  vertical slit in the box so that if you were, say, to have a dollar bill wrapped around the bottle, it would be able to escape through that slit if it wanted to.  I just used a plain old pair of scissors to achieve this, but for safety purposes you should probably use an exacto knife.  Make your slit about 2.75 inches long and 2 - 3 mm wide.

Step four:  This is the tricky part.  Remember the long string of dollar bills you made in step one?  I want you to wrap it around the base of one of the beers, leaving a long tail.  Stick the tail of the bills through the slit, then slowly put the bottle of beer back into the box, pulling the tail out of the slit as you go.  Did you do it?  Phew!  It took me a couple of trys to actually get the bottle in too.  Now you can roll your bottle back and forth until just a bit of the first dollar bill is sticking through the slot.

Step five:  Write some directions on the box so the recipient knows what to do when they open their gift.  I simply chose "pull."

Step six: Give.  And then laugh a whole lot.  Seriously, everyone at the table was dying.  Even though I knew what was coming I still laughed so hard I cried.  Luckily, the blog sister managed to capture a few actions shots:

Brother says, "Hmmm, what's this attached to my present?

"Maybe I should follow the clearly marked instructions!"

Huzzah!  What a lucky boy!

I'm sure my brother would like you to know that he usually does not wear suspenders, a bow tie, or a button of himself to dinner.  Or maybe he would...
