Four Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas

This month has completely flown by, but weirdly, since we hosted a Friendsgiving it feels like we're already past Thanksgiving in my brain. But nope, that's this week! After all of the craziness of last week with work (14 hour days all week - yikes!) this week is all about relaxing and catching up. I'm working minimally on Monday and Tuesday and then am off the rest of the week.

I always think Thanksgiving is going to be relaxing, but really since I was a kid it has always been a go-go-go couple of days. This year we're doing two Thanksgivings the day of, one in the morning with Jeff's dad's family, and then another that afternoon with Jeff's mom's family. I always get asked how it feels to eat two Thanksgiving dinners in one day, but really, it's not that bad. I'm not too crazy about Thanksgiving food, so I don't stuff myself silly. Just give me some mashed potatoes, turkey, and a vegetable that hasn't been casseroled, and I'm a happy girl! After the big Turkey day, we're spending Friday downtown with my mom's family, and then, because I'm a crazy person, we planned Mia's baptism for Sunday.

For Thanksgiving, we've always gone pretty casual since my mom stopped putting us in lacy, ruffly dresses in about 1993. Jeans and tee shirts are perfectly acceptable at our dinner table. But, you know me, I like to make things a little festive. I put together a couple of outfit ideas for you in case you're trying to figure out what to wear.

Outfit 1: Tee / Sweater / Jeans / Mules / Hair Clips

This is really just a fancy jeans and tee combo, but adding a cardigan and mules instead of sneakers makes everything feel a little fancier. I love these jeans for Thanksgiving because they're super stretchy, giving you ample food baby room, while still somehow sucking things in. I also like that the outfit is still special on its own when you take the shoes off, which I will be doing at both of our Thanksgivings.

In case your family gets a little more dressed up but you still want to feel super comfortable, this is the outfit for you. The leggings give a faux leather look, but really just have a slight sheen to them so they look fancier. The sweater is the coziest thing ever, it's so soft. I wore this all throughout my pregnancy and it is still going strong. This exact one is sold out, but there's a new version this year with slightly different sleeves. And then I love tossing on a scarf to add a little more visual interest. The plaid feels festive, but thanks to the colors screams fall instead of Christmas.

In case your family really does things up, this is the perfect outfit! It's actually what I'm planning on wearing to Mia's baptism. The dress is a sweater dress, so it's really easy to dress down too - I could see it looking super cute with some slouchy boots. This belt is something I snagged on sale a couple of years ago and I still reach for it all the time, I love how it adds just a touch of visual interest to whatever you're wearing.

Lol I did these in the wrooooong order hahaha, but oh well. With blue jeans and a white tee, this is really the most casual of the four. I love the J.Crew toothpick jeans because they're so soft and stretchy, I'm pretty sure I've slept in these before! And I also like this particular pair of jeans because they don't have a ton of distressing, so your grandma won't suggest you're homeless - or is that just my grandma? It's such a simple look, but with the fall colors you can't go wrong.

Three Cozy Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas + Our Thanksgiving Traditions

Happy Thanksgiving!! This year we're giving thanks for a healthy little baby girl growing inside of me, and thanks for the other two new baby girls in our family!

For Thanksgiving, Jeff and I typically have two big dinners in one day! Jeff's dad's family always celebrates Thanksgiving in the morning with the big meal around 11, so we're headed out to the suburbs bright and early this morning. Some of the unique things they do is always eating shrimp cocktail as an app with the biggest shrimp they can find (yes, it's a competition!) at, yes, 9am, and then his uncle always carves the steaming hot turkey with his hands. Yes. It's quite a feat to see. After we eat, the family always dives right into Christmas with a name draw for their Secret Santa. Everyone over the age of 21 and at least engaged to someone in the family participates, and they separate by men and women. For the first couple of years, I drew the same name every year for Jeff's cousin's wife who I didn't actually meet until our wedding - always fun to get a present for someone you don't know haha. Actually, this will be the sixth time I've participated and I think I've drawn her name four times!!

After seeing Jeff's family, we're headed up to my grandma's house for a giant dinner. I'm pretty sure she said 30 people would be there this year! It's always fun to hit my grandma's because she'll have completely decked out her house for Christmas already, and she goes all out. I'm talking giant life-size nutcrackers, a tree in just about every room, and a fleet of Santa Clauses out in the backyard. Be sure to check my InstaStories today, I'll try to share a bit!

So, if you don't have quite as busy of a day as us and are still thinking about what you'll wear today for all of that food, I have three cozy outfit ideas for you:

1. A Poncho

I mean, they're cozy, they're festive, and they basically hide your entire body so that food baby stays under wraps! Plus, when it's time for the inevitable post-dinner nap, you're already wearing a blanket ;) Pair it with a tee and jeans for a more casual look, or a sweater and faux leather leggings to at least look like you're a little dressed up!

2. A Shift Dress

Thank goodness shift dresses are in style right now, am I right?! I mean, they're so comfortable - and if you're pregnant like me, super bump friendly! If you aren't pregnant, super food baby friendly haha. I would just add tights to either of these and skip the sandals since it's been so cold, and you're good to go!

3. A Plaid Scarf
Just adding a hint of plaid to your outfit just makes it feel so fall, and makes it that much more cozy! I love adding them on top of a sweater to make it just a little more festive and visually interesting.

I hope you have a very happy Thanksgiving!!

Two Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas

Do you dress up for Thanksgiving, or is it more of a casual holiday for your family? I would say that my family wavers between totally casual and a little festive. I can't quite imagine having to go to a Thanksgiving where you needed to really dress up, you really need some space for a little turkey baby belly!

Last year we managed to schedule just one, quiet Thanksgiving for ourselves, but that won't be the case for 2018! We're planning to drive out west for Jeff's dad's family Thanksgiving in the morning where there are usually at least 15 people present between all of Jeff's aunts, uncles and cousins, and where one uncle usually "carves" the steaming hot turkey with his hands instead of a knife! Then we'll head up north to my parents' house to hopefully catch a little football (for Jeff) and a nap (for me) before we go to my grandma's house, where it should already be completely decked out for Christmas and we're expecting at least 20 of my extended family. Phew, I'm tired just thinking about it, but also excited for two servings of mashed potatoes in one day ;)

I'll probably be sticking with my pregnancy uniform of a cardigan and leggings for all of the eating and travel, but here are two outfit ideas for Thanksgiving in case you're looking for some inspiration.

Festive Thanksgiving: Sweater / Scarf / Skirt / Heels / Bag

Casual Thanksgiving: Sweatshirt / Necklace / Bag / Booties / Jeans

Ten Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas

You guys, Thanksgiving is next week.

What?

When did that happen?

But really though, I'm so not ready for Thanksgiving, especially because it's going to be a particularly crazy week. On Wednesday we're having Jeff's family over for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner, on Thursday we're heading up to my grandma's house for the day, and on Friday we're having lunch with my mom's family downtown and then we're getting on an airplane and flying to France. Note to self: make sure I don't need to do any last minute shopping before we leave. I probably need to do some last minute shopping before we leave.

Even though I don't love Thanksgiving food (ahh I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry!), I still try to go for comfort when dressing for the eating holiday of all eating holidays. Tight jeans? Nah. Form-fitting tees? Never. Bodycon dresses? Why on earth would you do that to yourself?!

Instead I try to go for leggings (or my new favorite stretchy jeans!) or higher waisted skirts that won't show off your food baby. I love pairing these with festive tops and sweaters that don't scream Christmas but are still fun. Or, you know, toss on a flowy fall dress and call it a day! Here's a little inspiration for your Turkey Day outfit:

Plaid About It

Wrap - Sole Society / Shirt and Shoes - J. Crew Factory / Jeans - Madewell / Bracelet - Michael Kors / Necklace (similar) - Girly

Oh dear, did I just make a pun? I may be in super need of this long weekend ;)

Sole Society has been having a crazy sale specifically on this wrap for the past couple of weeks, and after the first couple of emails about it I of course needed it. I'm so glad I decided to push buy, because it is so soft and cozy, and the plaid feels festive but will also be great after the holiday season. Plus, I'm wearing it as a wrap here but it can also be worn as a scarf. Win win win.

I have a feeling this wrap is going to be making an appearance during this holiday weekend. I love it with jeans, but I'm thinking of pairing it with some tights and a black mini for a slightly more dressed up look. I'm not seeing my sister this Thanksgiving so there won't be anyone to get mad at me ;)

Speaking of Thanksgiving, what are you up to? I'm used to having a pretty intense Thanksgiving weekend thanks to my family historically trying to cram in as many activities into four days as possible. Growing up, we would hit one or possibly two grandparents' houses for the big day. Then on Friday, we would head into Chicago with the extended family for our annual "Christmas Walk," which when we were little meant lunch and shopping and looking at the pretty decorations, and as we got older mostly meant hanging out in a bar all afternoon. Then on Saturday we would drive three hours each direction with a bunch of family friends to cut down a Christmas tree from my cousin's farm, and then rush home to get ready for a fancy Christmas party at my Grandma's house that night. Whew, I get exhausted just thinking about it!

These days we've cut out some of the activities, although the "Christmas Walk" bar hang is still in effect. Lately Jeff and I have been trying to squeeze two Turkey dinners into the big day though. His dad's family has their dinner around noon every year, and then his mom serves dinner later that night, giving us enough time to sneak in a turkey-filled nap between servings of mashed potatoes. It's crazy and exhausting and delicious, and I can't wait!

Oh, and sidebar, can we talk about these flats? Did I need a pair of flats with bows that are covered in glitter? Um, of course! They aren't super comfy, like I wouldn't walk miles in them, but for a little sparkle toe I'm willing to work with them. They're going to be the perfect party shoe this holiday season!

The Cozies

Sweater (similar) - LOFT / Scarf - Target / Pants - J. Crew Factory / Booties - TOMS / Bag - Sole Society

There are some days that you just want to be cozy, amiright? Last weekend we went to a Friendsgiving party, and with all of the turkey and mashed potatoes coming my way, I decided the comfier, the better. Leggings? Check. Oversized sweater? Check. Gigantic scarf that I could wrap around myself and wear as a dress if I wanted? Double check. This was somehow the first time I've worn this scarf since I got it, and you guys, it is the perfect blanket scarf. Not too crazy huge, and super soft.

For the real deal next week, I'll probably be wearing something really similar. I've always wished our family Thanksgivings were a little dressier, you know, so I'd have an excuse to wear my heels and dresses, but alas, we always go super casual. Also, if I try dressing up at all my sister gets mad at me. You should have seen her reaction when I ignored her "tee-shirts only" packing request for our family vacation this summer. She takes her comfortable dressing seriously.

What will you be wearing for Thanksgiving next week? Are you going dressy, or is comfort king?
