The 2018 Budget

It's that time of year... for a full 2018 budget recap! In 2018, I had a clothing budget of $350 a month which included everything except for undergarments, pajamas, workout clothes, and maternity essentials, and includes bigger ticket items like shoes, coats, and special occasion dresses. I'm not particularly hard on myself in terms of hitting that number each month, if I go over one month I'll just try to reel in my spending the next.

I've been sharing my clothing budget now for five years (what?!?) and during that time I've really tried to cut back on unnecessary purchases as well as fast fashion and things that wouldn't last. I would say I definitely have gotten better since I started tracking my budget, and it helps that I don't spend my lunch breaks wandering down State Street making impulse purchases. I have cut way back on spending at places like Forever 21 and Old Navy, where I would find I'd wear a piece only a few times before it either shrunk, started falling apart, or I stopped liking it. Every year though I say I'm going to try to spend more on fewer quality pieces, and it still isn't quite happening. But, that being said, I'm definitely in a better place now!

The Breakdown By Month

So here's what I spent in 2018! Each month links back to the original post.

January: $363.68
February: $401.48
March: $413.12
April: $322.75
May: $270.50
June: $209.75
July: $434.55
August: $378
September: $239.66
October: $271.09
November: $315.44
December: $127.80

Total Spent: $3,747.82
Average Monthly Spend: $312.32

I was expecting to be way under budget for the year since I haven't spent much for the last few months, but I forgot about my overspending at the beginning of the year! So things all seem to have averaged out, and I spent just a little more per month than in 2017

The Misses for 2018

So even though I think I've been getting better about what I buy, there were a few misses that managed to slip through. My worst purchases of the year all come from the first half of 2018, it's possible I'll change my mind on something I've purchased more recently but for now I think they were all good choices! Here were my worst purchases of the year:

LOFT Lace Blouse - originally $59.50, on sale $32.97. Purchased in March.
I thought this was so pretty, but really it never quite worked for me and I think I only ended up wearing it once. It was too cold to really wear for the office, felt too formal to wear casually, and never worked with a skirt like I wanted to. Plus I should have paid more attention to the arm holes, they're a little too big for me.
J.Crew Polartec Pullover - originally $118, on sale $37.99. Purchased in February.
This was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up, but I should have listened to my instincts and returned it because it's a little cropped and doesn't quite work on me. I should have waited until this winter, because I hear this year's version is longer and more flattering! I don't know that this is a total miss though because I do still wear it, just less than the other fleeces in my closet.
J.Crew Factory Necklace - originally $49.50, on sale $20.00. Purchased in May.
Again, something I thought was cute but never really wore. Partially because I always wanted to have on statement earrings instead of a necklace this summer, and partially because it ended up feeling a bit too juvenile / 2012. Plus one of the rows of beads came loose and it would scratch me. Note to self: stop buying cheap jewelry! I like the couple of classic pieces I wear every day better than anything else!
Sanctuary Tank - originally $69.00, on sale $41.40. Purchased in February.
I ended up buying this at the last minute for our trip to Charleston last spring and actually really liked it at the time - you can see I shared it here. But, when I went to wear it again this summer, I couldn't figure out what bra I had worn with it previously because it showed a ton of the sides of whatever bra I tried! So I don't know what was happening in Charleston then, or if I was just showing off my bra the whole time hahaha.

The Hits for 2018

So, what were some of my best purchases of 2018? This is hard to define since I had a lot of favorites, so I picked the things I ended up wearing the most.

J.Crew Factory Gingham Dress - originally $69.50, on sale $33.60. Purchased in May.
This is one of those dresses that worked for dressy or casual occasions, was fun to wear on trips, and worked once I got pregnant too. Definitely a good buy!
Madewell Jeans - originally $128.00, on sale $48.99. Purchased in January.
Madewell makes my favorite jeans, so I was really excited to find these on such good sale last year! My torso is too short for all of the high waisted jeans that are popular right now (they literally come up to my bra!) so I'm a fan of their medium rise, dark wash skinny jeans since you can really wear them anywhere and dress them up or down. Madewell is also a favorite because they offer "tall" and "taller" lengths for those of you with really long legs!
Clare V Petite Alice Bag - $175, used giftcard $0. Purchased in January.
This was purchased with a gift card from Christmas so really it was "free" for me but I still debated for a long time on whether or not to spend so much on a "trendy" item. Well jokes on me because I wore it non-stop, on our spring trip to Charleston, all over the place this summer, and to Hawaii this fall. Sometimes a statement bag like this just makes an outfit, and this one was so fun to wear!
New Balance Sneakers - originally $69.99, used coupon $49.99. Purchased in October.
I. Love. These. Sneakers.
They're amazingly comfortable which is the most important thing to me, but I love the little leather detailing that just makes them so cute. I'm only wearing "sock-style" sneakers these days (they don't have a separate tongue, and are really stretchy), and love that there's absolutely no rubbing!
Maggie London Gingham Dress - $128. Purchased in February.
I also bought this to wear in Charleston, but ended up wearing it all spring and summer long! It's such a fun piece but ended up working for a number of occasions, from bridal/baby showers to work to date night and everything in between. Plus it worked great at the beginning of my pregnancy too when things were starting to feel a little tight!
Halogen Cardigan - originally $79.00, on sale $42.90. Purchased in July.
I bought this as a part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale thinking I'd get some use out of it as a pregnancy layer, and man was I right! I've been wearing it basically non-stop, it's casual but manages to look good dressed up too. The only tricky thing is wearing it under a winter coat, I usually just take it off because it looks awkward hanging out the bottom and put it on once I get where I'm going. This exact cardigan is sold out, but here's a super similar one
Gibson Convertible Sweater - originally $54.00, on sale $36.18. Purchased in September.
This is so cozy and perfect for wearing with leggings! It's working as my bump grows but will also work great post-pregnancy. You can wear it off the shoulder or as a cowl neck, and I definitely have only ever worn it as a cowl neck!
Abercrombie Sherpa Pullover - originally $68, on sale $40.80. Purchased in September.
This was a risky purchase since I bought it just as my baby bump was starting to show up, so it could have had a really short shelf life, but I'm still wearing it now! It's so cozy and the perfect weight to wear around the house to stay warm without overheating. I wear it basically every day I work from home! This one is sold out but I also own and love last year's version.
J.Crew Factory White Shorts - originally $49.50, on sale $34.65. Purchased in March.
These were a replacement pair for another I wore to death in previous years, and I'm still loving them! I wore them non-stop until my baby bump made me stop, but they are so comfortable and stretchy, and short without being too short.
J.Crew Factory Plaid Scarf - originally $29.50, on sale $20.65. Purchased in November.
I mean, I couldn't really write a favorites list without including one of these scarves, you heard me rave about them all fall and this holiday season! I love that these make any simple outfit look that much cuter, and work well as cold weather accessories too. They're also the perfect size - not overwhelmingly big but not too small either. I now own six!
Old Navy Tee Dress - originally $26.99, on sale $10.00. Purchased in July.
I really got my $10 worth out of this dress! I bought it right at the beginning of my pregnancy to give my bump a little more room, and ended up wearing it all over the place this summer and fall.

Thoughts for 2019

I'm still feeling the $350 is a good amount for me per month. It might not seem like it because I still buy a lot, but it definitely does rein me in every month. That might change once our little baby girl joins our family and our expenses change, but I'll reevaluate once that happens.

Another Way to Wear - Black Bodycon Dress

Maternity Dress (love this casual dress or this dressier option if you aren't pregnant!) - Amazon / Wrap (similar here and here) - Sole Society / Maternity Fleece-Lined Tights - Loft / Booties - TOMS / Bag - Tory Burch / Velvet Hair Bow (similar here and here) - J.Crew / Charm Bracelet - Jet Set Candy / Necklace - Stella & Dot

I bought this dress on the cheap for my baby shower at the beginning of December (here's how I wore it then) figuring I'd only wear it one time, but I ended up getting a ton of use out of it over the past month! It's the perfect base layer for adding whatever else you want on top of it - a scarf, a poncho, a cardigan, a vest, or a flannel button down. Plus it really shows off that baby bump! These pictures are from before Christmas - the bump is somehow a lot bigger now!

This plaid wrap is a tiny bit Christmas-y (okay, maybe a lot with the red and green!) but it's actually pretty easy to wear post-Christmas too since it's just a touch of red. If you're looking to wear your holiday pieces into the winter, just try to tone down the Christmas a little by not pairing with other red and green items - I'm most likely to wear this with all black come January. This exact poncho is a couple years old now, and I have a huge collection of similar wraps in my closet. They're so versatile and so cozy to wear in the winter - it's a socially acceptable way to wear a blanket! Here are a few of my favorites that are currently in stock:

This week has been pretty quiet for me so far, things always slow way down over here in January both work-wise and social-wise. I haven't had any doctor's appointments this week (it's starting to feel like I live there - I'm 33 weeks!!) and I had to remotely attend my work team's offsite since I'm not allowed to fly, which meant staying on the computer true California hours (read: until 7 or 8pm Chicago time) the past couple of days. I'm actually fine with the slower days though because I've definitely noticed my energy levels dropping again - over the weekend I was in bed by nine each night! Getting in all that sleep before baby comes I guess - or at least trying to make up for the sleep I miss by repeatedly getting up to go to the bathroom or turning over to try to get comfortable! We do have a few fun things planned for this weekend though, including a Blackhawks game. Cross your fingers I'm able to keep my eyes open the whole time!

Favorite Outfits of 2018

Is it too late for another 2018 recap post? Too bad, because I actually have two coming at you this week! Sorry?

I love looking back at my outfits from the previous years because it lets me look at what works and what doesn't. While my outfits started getting a little more boring towards the end of the year as more and more of my clothes stopped fitting, I'm still noticing as in years past that my favorites include patterns, layers, color, and fun accessories. Here are some of my favorite outfits from 2018!

This Weekend...

This weekend I...

...went out for a casual date night with Jeff to Glenn's Diner for a little seafood. They seriously do the best fish - the pretzel crusted walleye is my favorite!!
...got a ton done around the house including getting our Christmas decorations down and getting the baby's room set up, and dropped off a bunch of boxes at Salvation Army. I'm in full-on nesting mode over here!! I also had this beautiful mirror delivered for the nursery but it was broken, so I had to take it back to the store and reorder. Fingers crossed the new one shows up fine!!
...went out to brunch with Jeff's parents to Fork in Lincoln Square (mostly so they could come over after and see the nursery), and you guys, I forgot just how good their brunch / lunch menu is!! Those chicken and waffles are to die for.
...drove out to the burbs for a little returning (ahem: and shopping) at Old Orchard and found so many good things at Nordstrom! I have a little try on session coming at you later this week!

Here's hoping you had a good one! Anyone else a Bachelor fan and excited for the season premier tonight? I really didn't want them to pick Colton (I'm scared the focus will be completely on the virginity thing!) but still can't wait for the madness to begin :)

Friday Finds

Happy Friday! It seems like forever since I've put together a Friday Finds post!!

What camp are you in - do you love coming back to work to a short week, or does it stress you out that there's so much to cram into fewer days? For me it really depends on the time of year and how many people were on vacation with me. Since basically my whole department seems to have taken off the week between Christmas and New Year's so my week back was actually not too bad. The really crazy thing is though that I realized I only have six weeks left before I go on maternity leave!! I've been working on a plan for how things will work while I'm away, but everything is feeling a lot more real now.

So on to the finds! I couldn't help but order those long sleeve pajamas for myself when they were on sale over Christmas. I have the short sleeve / shorts version and freaking love them, they're so soft and cozy. I'm figuring the button front will be great for breastfeeding. Or at least that's how I'm justifying buying another pair of pajamas for myself ;)

December Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

And we're at the final budget post for 2018!! I'll be back next week with my thoughts on the budget for the full year, but for now we'll stick with December.

I feel like my budget posts are getting less and less interesting as I get more and more pregnant because really, I'm shopping way less than I used to. I'm at the point now where I'll see something is a great deal, but I don't want to buy it because I don't know what size I'll be next winter or whether I'll still want whatever it is. Case in point: the AMAZING sales that were going on at J.Crew in November/December. I really wanted to snag a new wool coat since they were at such good prices, but ultimately just bought some accessories instead.

I am super excited about the sherpa vest I snagged on sale though - how freaking cute is it?! Plus so cozy. I also finally took the plunge and ordered a piece of clothing from Amazon. I was expecting the quality to be terrible and for it to run really small, but I actually was pleasantly surprised! I ordered a large, and it fits perfectly over the bump (but will also be great post-baby).

So here's the damage for December:

Loft Sherpa Vest - originally $64.50, on sale $32.25. You can see where I wore this here, I've been wearing it on repeat since I got it and it's so freaking cozy! There are just a couple sizes left as I write this, but there's also a sweater version available.
J.Crew Leopard Hat - originally $29.50, on sale $14.75. This has been on my wishlist for a while so I was excited to pull the trigger, especially since I hear hats are a mom's best friend ;) This one might be a teeny bit too small for my giant head though, so I'm still unsure if I'm keeping it or not.
J.Crew Factory Plaid Shirt - originally $46.50, on sale $32.55, used rewards $27.55. I ordered this literally three months ago and it was on backordered until after Christmas! I actually had forgotten I even ordered it hahaha. But I'm glad I did, it's a cute, classic pattern that I'll be able to wear now (open over a tee) and will be great for breastfeeding too.
American Eagle Sweatshirt - originally $44.95, on sale $25.00. I bought this on a whim to wear over the holidays, and it was such a fun purchase!! It even won me the Christmas sweater contest at work (of course, I may have been the only contest participant not on the judging committee hahaha) and I wore it to parties and as my Christmas pajamas. I'll definitely be on the hunt for another fun Christmas sweater at the start of the next holiday season!
J.Crew Velvet Knot Hair Tie - originally $16.50, on sale $8.25. Yes, I bought myself a scrunchie. 1992 Kristina is very pleased. But really though, I love the concept of a hair bow, but love that this one is way easier to wear. I threw it in a few messy buns this holiday season to make them a little more festive, and will definitely be wearing it until spring decides to show it's face (you know, in May).
Amazon Striped Tee - $15.00. I've been wearing this a ton over the last month, it's such a good layering piece! Most tees are a little short for my taste (especially with the bump) but this is perfect for wearing over leggings and with longer cardigans. I'm contemplating snagging another color or two.

Total Spent: $127.80
Total Saved: $89.15

So way under budget for December! And I didn't really buy much in maternity either for the month so I'm feeling pretty good :) I did actually end up ordering the Madewell Zip-Top Transport Tote as a present for myself after Christmas with a giftcard and some Christmas money, but it's actually backordered until April!! So someday I'll have a new bag hahaha. There is also still a hole in my wardrobe I've been trying to fill - dressier black boots. Hoping I can find a pair that's cute and agrees with my super picky feet soon!

Happy New Year!

Oh hey there, did you miss me?? I loved taking a break for the holidays, it was great to get a little chance to recharge, but now I'm back and ready for more!

Our long Christmas break was amazing but super busy!! The week before Christmas we snuck in lots of time with Jeff's dad's family. His dad throws a Christmas party the Thursday before Christmas every year, and this year their little baby girl Isabella was the party princess. She is getting so big and so cute!! We also drove up to Northwestern for a basketball game where a family friend is one of the coaches. I'm not a huge sports person but am obviously all in for the snacks. Our tickets included access to the club level that had a big dessert bar, so you had better believe I was all over that!! I also ended up meeting a ton of Chicago sports people, but sadly not Pat Tomasulo ;)

My brother and his family flew in from South Korea for Christmas, which was especially exciting since we got to meet their new baby girl Penny!! They were here over the summer when my SIL Claire was pregnant but Penny was born this fall when they went back to Korea. She is just darling, but I think the cutest thing ever is they have this little bath ring for her that lets her swim around in the tub - so adorable!! Since they were only here for 10 days, I spent a lot of time up at my parents getting some good baby cuddle time in ;) We also made it out to Brookfield Zoo one day which was freezing but still fun. I love that the Lincoln Park Zoo is right in the city and free, but Brookfield is really a huge step up, I always love the monkey & ape house!

Our Christmas itself is always a little crazy. We spent Christmas Eve at my parents' house where we did our annual giant white elephant with my mom's extended family, which always means lots of shouting and laughing. As Jeff has discovered over the years, we aren't really the quietest of families ;) On Christmas Day I woke up around 4am (#pregnancyprobs) which meant a little extra time with Penny who was just a tinge jet lagged, until everyone else woke up for banana bread, egg casserole and of course presents! Then we snuck out to drive down to Jeff's parents' house for Christmas round two. His stepdad is from the mid-Atlantic which means their Christmas brunch always includes fried tomatoes on biscuits and oyster stew. After brunch and presents, the rest of the family went out to play a few rounds of paddle tennis while I napped up, and then we spent the rest of the day lounging around.

Besides all of the Christmas festivities, Jeff and I managed to go to the movies twice. We saw Mary Poppins, which I thought was good but not great, and The Favourite, which I thought was weird but hilarious. It's a dark comedy/satire period piece about Queen Anne in England in the 1800s with Emma Stone as the lead, and I would definitely recommend giving it a watch!

For New Year's Eve, a bunch of our friends wound up going for a group dinner at Brownstone and then on a northside dive bar crawl. I made it to one bar before calling it quits, which got Jeff and I home in time to count down to the East Coast New Year and then I went to bed! Then on New Year's Day our friends hosted a daytime pajama party with no hair products allowed ;) After that I headed up to a farewell dinner for my brother's family before ending Christmas break with an early bedtime.

It was a crazy one but still so fun, and I'm so grateful for all of the family time we got to sneak in. Cheers to 2019!
