The 2018 Budget

It's that time of year... for a full 2018 budget recap! In 2018, I had a clothing budget of $350 a month which included everything except for undergarments, pajamas, workout clothes, and maternity essentials, and includes bigger ticket items like shoes, coats, and special occasion dresses. I'm not particularly hard on myself in terms of hitting that number each month, if I go over one month I'll just try to reel in my spending the next.

I've been sharing my clothing budget now for five years (what?!?) and during that time I've really tried to cut back on unnecessary purchases as well as fast fashion and things that wouldn't last. I would say I definitely have gotten better since I started tracking my budget, and it helps that I don't spend my lunch breaks wandering down State Street making impulse purchases. I have cut way back on spending at places like Forever 21 and Old Navy, where I would find I'd wear a piece only a few times before it either shrunk, started falling apart, or I stopped liking it. Every year though I say I'm going to try to spend more on fewer quality pieces, and it still isn't quite happening. But, that being said, I'm definitely in a better place now!

The Breakdown By Month

So here's what I spent in 2018! Each month links back to the original post.

January: $363.68
February: $401.48
March: $413.12
April: $322.75
May: $270.50
June: $209.75
July: $434.55
August: $378
September: $239.66
October: $271.09
November: $315.44
December: $127.80

Total Spent: $3,747.82
Average Monthly Spend: $312.32

I was expecting to be way under budget for the year since I haven't spent much for the last few months, but I forgot about my overspending at the beginning of the year! So things all seem to have averaged out, and I spent just a little more per month than in 2017

The Misses for 2018

So even though I think I've been getting better about what I buy, there were a few misses that managed to slip through. My worst purchases of the year all come from the first half of 2018, it's possible I'll change my mind on something I've purchased more recently but for now I think they were all good choices! Here were my worst purchases of the year:

LOFT Lace Blouse - originally $59.50, on sale $32.97. Purchased in March.
I thought this was so pretty, but really it never quite worked for me and I think I only ended up wearing it once. It was too cold to really wear for the office, felt too formal to wear casually, and never worked with a skirt like I wanted to. Plus I should have paid more attention to the arm holes, they're a little too big for me.
J.Crew Polartec Pullover - originally $118, on sale $37.99. Purchased in February.
This was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up, but I should have listened to my instincts and returned it because it's a little cropped and doesn't quite work on me. I should have waited until this winter, because I hear this year's version is longer and more flattering! I don't know that this is a total miss though because I do still wear it, just less than the other fleeces in my closet.
J.Crew Factory Necklace - originally $49.50, on sale $20.00. Purchased in May.
Again, something I thought was cute but never really wore. Partially because I always wanted to have on statement earrings instead of a necklace this summer, and partially because it ended up feeling a bit too juvenile / 2012. Plus one of the rows of beads came loose and it would scratch me. Note to self: stop buying cheap jewelry! I like the couple of classic pieces I wear every day better than anything else!
Sanctuary Tank - originally $69.00, on sale $41.40. Purchased in February.
I ended up buying this at the last minute for our trip to Charleston last spring and actually really liked it at the time - you can see I shared it here. But, when I went to wear it again this summer, I couldn't figure out what bra I had worn with it previously because it showed a ton of the sides of whatever bra I tried! So I don't know what was happening in Charleston then, or if I was just showing off my bra the whole time hahaha.

The Hits for 2018

So, what were some of my best purchases of 2018? This is hard to define since I had a lot of favorites, so I picked the things I ended up wearing the most.

J.Crew Factory Gingham Dress - originally $69.50, on sale $33.60. Purchased in May.
This is one of those dresses that worked for dressy or casual occasions, was fun to wear on trips, and worked once I got pregnant too. Definitely a good buy!
Madewell Jeans - originally $128.00, on sale $48.99. Purchased in January.
Madewell makes my favorite jeans, so I was really excited to find these on such good sale last year! My torso is too short for all of the high waisted jeans that are popular right now (they literally come up to my bra!) so I'm a fan of their medium rise, dark wash skinny jeans since you can really wear them anywhere and dress them up or down. Madewell is also a favorite because they offer "tall" and "taller" lengths for those of you with really long legs!
Clare V Petite Alice Bag - $175, used giftcard $0. Purchased in January.
This was purchased with a gift card from Christmas so really it was "free" for me but I still debated for a long time on whether or not to spend so much on a "trendy" item. Well jokes on me because I wore it non-stop, on our spring trip to Charleston, all over the place this summer, and to Hawaii this fall. Sometimes a statement bag like this just makes an outfit, and this one was so fun to wear!
New Balance Sneakers - originally $69.99, used coupon $49.99. Purchased in October.
I. Love. These. Sneakers.
They're amazingly comfortable which is the most important thing to me, but I love the little leather detailing that just makes them so cute. I'm only wearing "sock-style" sneakers these days (they don't have a separate tongue, and are really stretchy), and love that there's absolutely no rubbing!
Maggie London Gingham Dress - $128. Purchased in February.
I also bought this to wear in Charleston, but ended up wearing it all spring and summer long! It's such a fun piece but ended up working for a number of occasions, from bridal/baby showers to work to date night and everything in between. Plus it worked great at the beginning of my pregnancy too when things were starting to feel a little tight!
Halogen Cardigan - originally $79.00, on sale $42.90. Purchased in July.
I bought this as a part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale thinking I'd get some use out of it as a pregnancy layer, and man was I right! I've been wearing it basically non-stop, it's casual but manages to look good dressed up too. The only tricky thing is wearing it under a winter coat, I usually just take it off because it looks awkward hanging out the bottom and put it on once I get where I'm going. This exact cardigan is sold out, but here's a super similar one
Gibson Convertible Sweater - originally $54.00, on sale $36.18. Purchased in September.
This is so cozy and perfect for wearing with leggings! It's working as my bump grows but will also work great post-pregnancy. You can wear it off the shoulder or as a cowl neck, and I definitely have only ever worn it as a cowl neck!
Abercrombie Sherpa Pullover - originally $68, on sale $40.80. Purchased in September.
This was a risky purchase since I bought it just as my baby bump was starting to show up, so it could have had a really short shelf life, but I'm still wearing it now! It's so cozy and the perfect weight to wear around the house to stay warm without overheating. I wear it basically every day I work from home! This one is sold out but I also own and love last year's version.
J.Crew Factory White Shorts - originally $49.50, on sale $34.65. Purchased in March.
These were a replacement pair for another I wore to death in previous years, and I'm still loving them! I wore them non-stop until my baby bump made me stop, but they are so comfortable and stretchy, and short without being too short.
J.Crew Factory Plaid Scarf - originally $29.50, on sale $20.65. Purchased in November.
I mean, I couldn't really write a favorites list without including one of these scarves, you heard me rave about them all fall and this holiday season! I love that these make any simple outfit look that much cuter, and work well as cold weather accessories too. They're also the perfect size - not overwhelmingly big but not too small either. I now own six!
Old Navy Tee Dress - originally $26.99, on sale $10.00. Purchased in July.
I really got my $10 worth out of this dress! I bought it right at the beginning of my pregnancy to give my bump a little more room, and ended up wearing it all over the place this summer and fall.

Thoughts for 2019

I'm still feeling the $350 is a good amount for me per month. It might not seem like it because I still buy a lot, but it definitely does rein me in every month. That might change once our little baby girl joins our family and our expenses change, but I'll reevaluate once that happens.

December Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

And we're at the final budget post for 2018!! I'll be back next week with my thoughts on the budget for the full year, but for now we'll stick with December.

I feel like my budget posts are getting less and less interesting as I get more and more pregnant because really, I'm shopping way less than I used to. I'm at the point now where I'll see something is a great deal, but I don't want to buy it because I don't know what size I'll be next winter or whether I'll still want whatever it is. Case in point: the AMAZING sales that were going on at J.Crew in November/December. I really wanted to snag a new wool coat since they were at such good prices, but ultimately just bought some accessories instead.

I am super excited about the sherpa vest I snagged on sale though - how freaking cute is it?! Plus so cozy. I also finally took the plunge and ordered a piece of clothing from Amazon. I was expecting the quality to be terrible and for it to run really small, but I actually was pleasantly surprised! I ordered a large, and it fits perfectly over the bump (but will also be great post-baby).

So here's the damage for December:

Loft Sherpa Vest - originally $64.50, on sale $32.25. You can see where I wore this here, I've been wearing it on repeat since I got it and it's so freaking cozy! There are just a couple sizes left as I write this, but there's also a sweater version available.
J.Crew Leopard Hat - originally $29.50, on sale $14.75. This has been on my wishlist for a while so I was excited to pull the trigger, especially since I hear hats are a mom's best friend ;) This one might be a teeny bit too small for my giant head though, so I'm still unsure if I'm keeping it or not.
J.Crew Factory Plaid Shirt - originally $46.50, on sale $32.55, used rewards $27.55. I ordered this literally three months ago and it was on backordered until after Christmas! I actually had forgotten I even ordered it hahaha. But I'm glad I did, it's a cute, classic pattern that I'll be able to wear now (open over a tee) and will be great for breastfeeding too.
American Eagle Sweatshirt - originally $44.95, on sale $25.00. I bought this on a whim to wear over the holidays, and it was such a fun purchase!! It even won me the Christmas sweater contest at work (of course, I may have been the only contest participant not on the judging committee hahaha) and I wore it to parties and as my Christmas pajamas. I'll definitely be on the hunt for another fun Christmas sweater at the start of the next holiday season!
J.Crew Velvet Knot Hair Tie - originally $16.50, on sale $8.25. Yes, I bought myself a scrunchie. 1992 Kristina is very pleased. But really though, I love the concept of a hair bow, but love that this one is way easier to wear. I threw it in a few messy buns this holiday season to make them a little more festive, and will definitely be wearing it until spring decides to show it's face (you know, in May).
Amazon Striped Tee - $15.00. I've been wearing this a ton over the last month, it's such a good layering piece! Most tees are a little short for my taste (especially with the bump) but this is perfect for wearing over leggings and with longer cardigans. I'm contemplating snagging another color or two.

Total Spent: $127.80
Total Saved: $89.15

So way under budget for December! And I didn't really buy much in maternity either for the month so I'm feeling pretty good :) I did actually end up ordering the Madewell Zip-Top Transport Tote as a present for myself after Christmas with a giftcard and some Christmas money, but it's actually backordered until April!! So someday I'll have a new bag hahaha. There is also still a hole in my wardrobe I've been trying to fill - dressier black boots. Hoping I can find a pair that's cute and agrees with my super picky feet soon!

November Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

I feel like I say this every time I write a budget post, but how on earth is November almost over?! Between Thanksgiving and our trip to Hawaii, the month just flew by. As per the usual with months when we have a big trip, I didn't do a ton of shopping, mainly because I was checked out for so long! The scarves and cardigans I actually ordered back in October but they hadn't arrived in time for that month's post.

My favorite purchase for the month is also the least practical - that pretty sequined handbag! Ever since seeing a friend carry a pretty beaded and sequined handbag to a wedding a few years ago, I've been on the hunt for something similar. It's such a fun and easy way to dress up a basic black dress (or just jeans and a tee)! I haven't brought it out to play yet, but I know it's something I'll have and use for years to come.

So here's the damage for November:

J.Crew Factory Plaid Scarves - originally $29.50, on sale $20.65 x2. Yes, I now own six of these scarves, but they really are the best! Inexpensive but they don't look it, and they're nice and warm! I wear them both as a part of an outfit and with my coats as a warm layer. I get compliments every time I wear one. How fun is the red and green one for the holidays?!
LOFT Cape - originally $79.50, on sale $39.75. I shared this cape yesterday, and it is so soft and so cute! Definitely a good buy for the holidays, and when reversed to the navy side, the rest of winter!
Old Navy Cardigans - originally $39.99, on sale $27.99 x2. I ordered these when I was getting ready for a party back in October and realized I didn't own a black cardigan - what?! These are great dupes for the Madewell cardigans that are so popular right now (I have one in green) and feel surprisingly high quality for the price! I still might return the purple/gray color though - I feel like it isn't the most flattering color on my skin tone.
Sole Society Boots - originally $149.95, on sale $127.46. I had these on my wishlist for a long time and was unsure on ordering them - mainly because I already had a couple pairs of riding boots, and since booties are more in style right now. But I ended up snagging them because I can't stand having cold winter ankles with booties all winter (Chicago problems!) and the day after they came my other favorite pair of tall boots bit the dust! I literally pulled the zipper right off of them!! So I'm very glad to have these now. They definitely won't work for you if you have a wider calf, they fit very close on me. I would also say they run slightly narrow, but wearing them around one day was enough to loosen them up for me.
Sole Society Bag - originally $59.95, on sale $50.95. Like I said above, this is so cute in person and I'll be using it for years to come! It's a good size, big enough to fit both of my phones plus my other party essentials, and it has a chain that you can use to wear crossbody or on the shoulder, or you can tuck the chain inside and wear it as a clutch.

Total Spent: $315.44
Total Saved: $112.94

So for December, I don't have a ton on my wishlist since I'm sticking to my maternity uniform (leggings, a tee shirt, plus another layer) through the end of February. I'll probably just be looking for a pair of winter shoes or boots that are easy to slip on for when it gets really hard to bend over, and another pair of maternity leggings!

So tell me, did you budget in November? Get any good steals?

October Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

Yay for fall, the season of plaid and sweaters!! I know that come January I will be so tired of wearing sweaters, but for now I'm all about it! Here's what I purchased in October:

J.Crew Factory Plaid Scarves - originally $29.50, on sale $17.70 x2. I ordered one of these last year and loved it, so I snagged a few more when they were on sale. I wear these with my winter coats but also just over a sweater or tee.
New Balance Sneakers - originally $69.99, used coupon $49.99. I saw these on Jill and basically had to have them - I mean, how cute is the leather tag?! These are also the sock style of sneaker that I love, which makes them super comfortable and also means they easily slip on and don't need to be worn with socks.
J.Crew Factory Plaid Flannel Shirt - originally $42.50, on sale $25.50. I'm just getting to the point where I'm having a hard time buttoning shirts, so I've been wearing this open over a tee shirt. I love the white base, it's different than everything else in my closet and will be fun for the holidays but doesn't scream Christmas so I'll be able to wear it outside the holidays too.
Loft Open Cardigan - originally $59.50, on sale $29.75, used giftcard $0. I discovered a couple gift cards from last Christmas and ended up ordering this - it's so cute and luxe looking in real life! I've only worn it once because Jeff spilled beer all over it and it's been in the laundry pile since then, but I'm excited to get more use out of it! Oh and just a note, I don't know what the fabric is but it's basically impermeable, because I didn't notice being spilled on until Jeff freaked out haha ;) Definitely size down - I ended up getting a medium and the fit is perfect.
Loft Striped Poncho - originally $69.50, on sale $34.75, used giftcard $0. I wanted another layer since cardigans are basically my pregnancy uniform, and this one definitely fit the bill. Just a note that this is not particularly warm, probably better if you're in the South and have not already entered winter haha. I usually size down in Loft ponchos but ordered the L/XL because it was the only thing available at the time, and the fit is actually fine.
J.Crew Factory Sweaters - originally $49.50, on sale $29.70 x2. This was another favorite from last year that I reordered. I got XLs this time (last year I ordered larges) to be able to wear them for longer and the fit is way oversized but not enough to look crazy. I wore one here, and you can see that they typically fall off of one shoulder which I think is cute, but if you want them to fit less oversized I would size down.
J.Crew Quilted Field Jacket - originally $168, on sale $100.80. I've been wanting this for over a year now and decided to pull the trigger during a sale earlier this year. It was backordered in the tall sizes for six weeks, but finally got delivered and was definitely worth the wait. I love that it's warmer than my regular field jacket and has snaps on the sides to make the fit more flattering. I'm hoping to get a lot more wear out of it this fall before my belly gets too big!

Total Spent: $271.09
Total Saved: $167.40

For November, I'll probably be looking for some holiday pieces (it's my favorite to dress for!) but I also already ordered a few things (including this vest) that I'm waiting to come that have already taken a chunk of the budget for the month.

Did you score any good deals this month??

September Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

Yay, all the fall things!! I said yesterday that my pregnancy dressing philosophy is going to be lots of cardigans and jackets and vests, but I guess that's not entirely true - I've also been buying anything that's drapey and long so that I'll hopefully be able to wear it for the next couple months and post-pregnancy. My goal is to maybe buy a few maternity tees as well as jeans/leggings, and then find regular clothes to fill the rest of the holes. I did decide I will not be counting maternity wear towards my monthly total, as like workout clothes / pajamas, underwear, it's stuff I need versus stuff I want. So far I've only gotten leggings, one pair of shorts, and a couple pairs of jeans (from Old Navy, they offer long sizes!!) and returned a loooooot of things haha.

So here's the damage for September:

Abercrombie Sweatshirt Dress - originally $58, on sale $34.80. TBH, I only added this to my cart to qualify for free shipping, but it really is super cute and comfy. Fall dresses aren't all that practical in Chicago as it's usually either too hot or too cold to get away with one, but I'm hoping to get a couple of wears out of this! It really is cute in person and very bump friendly.
BP Sandal (sold out!) - originally $34.95, on sale $13.98. And these I bought only because of the price! I figured I'd return them if the quality was bad, but they actually are surprisingly comfortable. I'm digging them now as a good transition piece - they feel a lot more fall-appropriate than most other sandals. Also figuring I'll get a lot of use out of them next year!
Abercrombie Sherpa Pullover - originally $68, on sale $40.80. After loving my Abercrombie pullover from last winter, I decided to go for it with this one once it went on sale. It's so cozy and warm, perfect for fall!
Old Navy Knit Vest - originally $36.99, on sale $27.20. Shared this one yesterday and I love it! Wearing a large here.
Gibson Tunic - originally $54.00, on sale $36.18. I actually ordered this last fall and ended up returning it, but for some reason I decided to try it again and like it now! Just note that I am never wearing it off the shoulder like it's pictured, it can also be a cowl neck which is much more my fall/pregnancy style haha. The length is great too, very bump friendly.
Madewell Cardigan - originally $98, on sale $58.80. This was actually on my wishlist during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but I didn't end up grabbing it then because I bought too many things. Well, after returning a ton of stuff I felt like I could justify this again, and I'm so glad I did! It's very soft, a great length, and I love the color for fall. As I'm typing this it's out of stock, but if you want it I would keep checking as I keep seeing colors and sizes popping up.
Lush Tunic - originally $42.00, on sale $27.90. I've considered this for a few years but was always worried it would be too low-cut on me. Turns out it's not! This is such a pretty color for fall too.

Total Spent: $239.66
Total Saved: $152.28

Very happy with everything I got this month!! I basically already spent my entire budget for October over the weekend though (whoops) so trying to rein things in for the rest of the month.

Did you score any good deals in September??

August Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

Ahhh how is August already almost over?! After buying all of the things in July, here's a much more reasonable budget post - I actually only bought three of these items this month since two are holdovers that I forgot to share in July! Giving myself a big pat on the back right now ;)

Here's what I snagged this month:

Halogen Cashmere Poncho (available in more colors here) - originally $149, on sale $98.90. I loooooove this piece. Honestly even on sale the price is more than I would normally pay for something like this, but really I'm so glad I did. It's really soft and comfortable, and I've already worn it while traveling. I know I'm going to get a ton of use out of it this fall and winter.
Ann Taylor Suede Sandals - originally $128, on sale + used rewards $66.80. I already own these exact heels in green and have been wearing them everywhere this summer, so when I saw this pretty fall red was available I had to snag them. I've already worn them a couple of times, they're so comfortable!!
Ann Taylor Floral Dress - originally $139, on sale + used rewards $73.40. This dress is so, so cute in person. It's an amazing cut that's flowy but still flattering at the same time, and really is the perfect length that works for work or the weekend.
Socialite Tie Thermal Tee - $39. I'm still not 100% sure on this tee - I think it just would look better if it were slightly more oversized on me. But I love the concept so much I might keep it anyway. It's fun that it's lightweight and short sleeved, which will be great for transitioning into fall (but will still work with cardigans once the weather cools down). Right now it's sitting in my return pile but I keep trying it on to see if I want to give it a chance.
Gentle Souls Loafers (also available in taupe) - originally $149.95, on sale $99.90. In case you've somehow missed it, I have incredibly picky feet. These are basically the comfiest things I've ever put on them between the already broken in heel and the cushioned insoles. They'll be great for my big work conference coming up at the end of September!

Total Spent: $378
Total Saved: $226.95

So, if I do end up returning that thermal tee I'll be right on budget for the month! Maybe I do want to take it back haha ;) I'm really happy with everything else I got this month though, and I'm happy I spent a little more on each item to get some quality pieces for my closet. As far as next month goes, I'm looking for a few more transitional pieces to get me through the early part of fall.

What are you shopping for?

July Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

...So, you think I bought enough this month? Lol! I'm actually a little embarrassed - turns out in July I shopped a lot. I returned a lot, but I seem to have kept a lot too.

This is always the month where I start shopping for fall (thanks Nordstrom Anniversary Sale!) and I'm really pumped about my fall wardrobe so far. I freaking love that fuzzy pullover - I saw it on repeat last winter but never bought it because the sizing made it seem like it would be way too small. I ordered a large, and it actually fits great. I ended up wearing it over the weekend on our trip to Michigan and it was so soft and cozy. I'm also weirdly psyched about the tee shirt dresses from Old Navy. They were incredibly inexpensive and are so comfortable and versatile - definitely layering these with all of my cardigans and scarves come fall!

So, here are all of my purchases for July. Just a note, I am holding off on sharing a few of my #nsale purchases that I'm not 100% about keeping yet - the rest will be included next month!

Halogen Tee - originally $39.00, on sale $24.90. This is the perfect layering piece, tried on here.
J. Crew Rainbow Stripe Tee - originally $42.50, on sale $29.75. This tee is so fun to wear, especially with white shorts!
Old Navy Flag Hat - originally $16.99, on sale $10.00. I snagged this for the Fourth of July, how freaking cute!
J.Crew Factory Pom Pom Trim Tee - originally $44.50, on sale $18.00. I literally forgot I bought this because I wore it for about an hour and immediately spilled on myself. But, it seems to have come through the wash alright and I rediscovered it this week. The pom pom detail makes it so cute for summer!
BP Plaid Poncho - originally $39.00, on sale $25.90. So cute for fall but sadly already sold out!
Adidas Sneakers - originally $85.00, on sale $63.90. I have such picky feet, even when it comes to sneakers, and I was so happy to discover these are so comfortable! They're a sock style shoe that slips on and contours to your foot, and you don't actually have to wear socks with them. Love love love.
Halogen Cardigan - originally $79.00, on sale $42.90. This was a late sale purchase for me after I didn't love a few other cardigans I tried, and I'm so excited for this one! It's really soft, I love the length, and the green color will be so pretty for fall and the holiday season.
Old Navy Tee Dress (purchased in black and gray) - originally $26.99, on sale $10.00.
BP Pocket Plaid Shirt - originally $49.00, on sale $31.90. This was another late sale purchase, I love that there are only buttons on the top which gives it a great fit. RETURNED!! I never wore this so I ended up taking it back. It just didn't quite work for maternity.
J.Crew Factory Chambray Shorts - originally $34.50, on sale $19.50. I ordered these kind of on a whim after trying them on here and not being wowed. And have basically not worn another pair of shorts since. They're so comfy and go with everything!
Sole Society Tote - originally $64.95, on sale $42.90. I loooove this bag, it's super high quality for such a good price. Packed this as my personal item for my flight out to San Francisco this morning!
J.Crew Factory Sandals - originally $59.50, on sale $19.50. I honestly bought these because the price was so good, which is not a good reason to buy something. But I love the calf hair leopard print, and have worn them a few times (though not nearly as much as my TKEES!) so I'm getting that twenty bucks out of them!
LOFT Cardigan - originally $49.50, on sale $29.70. I'd been on the hunt for a summer weight cardigan, and this one fit the bill. It's really soft and comfortable, perfect for all that air conditioning!
Thread & Supply Wubby Fleece Pullover - originally $78.00, on sale $51.90. In case you haven't figured it out, I love this. Got a size large and the fit is perfect.
LOFT Eyelet Top - originally $59.50, on sale $35.70. I love a good white blouse for summer, so sad this is now sold out!

Total Spent: $434.55
Total Saved: $311.37

Whew, so just a little bit of spending, right?! So, for August I can really say I'm not shopping for anything in particular, and will be attempting to hold myself back. Wish me luck!

June Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

I had completely convinced myself that I hadn't bought anything new in June and that there wouldn't be anything to share. I've basically been traveling the whole month so there wasn't even time to shop! Of course, I forgot about all of those purchases I made back at the end of May that didn't arrive in time to include in my May budget post. Duh. Don't worry, in the three days I've been home I've already ordered about a hundred things, so there should be lots to share for July!

LOFT Kimono - originally $49.50, on sale $29.70. I'm actually wearing it while I type this! I love the concept of the kimono, they're such a fun lightweight layer for summer, and easier to wear than a scarf. This particular style is sold out, but I also love this one and this one.
J.Crew Factory Embroidered Tee - originally $59.50, on sale $29.95. This tee is so cute I'm willing to forgive it for being super sheer - it's actually fine if you wear a nude bra underneath but just wanted to put that out there as a word of warning! The embroidery is really pretty, and it's nice and lightweight for those hot summer days.
LOFT Ruffle Shorts - originally $49.50, on sale $29.70. These have the look of a mini skirt thanks to the ruffle and are so cute in person - you can see me trying them on here. I love that they're a slightly dressier shorts option.
J.Crew Factory Sweater Blazer - originally $98.00, on sale $49.00. I tried this on in stores and fell in love - it's so comfy but slightly more dressed up than a regular sweater. Definitely perfect for chilly summer offices!
Lou & Grey Hoodie Tee - originally $59.50, on sale $35.70. I've been wearing this basically non-stop around the house (well, at least for the few days I've actually been home!) and it is SO soft and cozy without being too hot for summer. The sides have slits which makes it a little breezier, although I wear a tank underneath.
LOFT Summer Vibes Sweater - originally $59.50, on sale $35.70. How freaking cute is this sweater?! It's the perfect weight for chilly summer nights and has a great drape to it.

Total Spent: $209.75
Total Saved: $165.75

Waaaaaay under budget for the month - high five me! So far for July I've bought two hats and a bunch of shorts. These purchases feel very not me haha, but I realized with all of our travel that I was basically just wearing the same two pairs of shorts over and over. For the rest of summer, I'm looking for lightweight dresses that can work for the office or for the weekend. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale will also be here in July so I'm probably going to start shopping for fall. I know, I know, I'm disgusted also. But if there's anything I've learned from shopping (or not shopping) the sale in the past, it's that I should buy the stuff now, because inevitably come September I'll want it and then have to pay full price. Want to shop the sale early? Be sure to sign up for a Nordstrom card now for early access!! Having the card last year was amazing because so much stuff sold out after the first couple of days and was never restocked.

May Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

I keep overdoing it on the warm weather clothes. The dress section of my closet is basically exploding out of its space, and I have so many warm weather outfits I want to wear that I don't know what to do. Here's what I purchased this month:

J.Crew Factory Chambray Dress - originally $79.50, on sale $47.50. As I mentioned in my J.Crew Factory post earlier this week, this dress is amazing. I wore it over the weekend in Michigan to go wine tasting, and it is so comfortable and flattering and cute. Definitely size up in this as the chest area runs small.
BP Earrings - originally $14, on sale $7.98. I initially thought I would return these, and then all the sudden I was wearing them. Guess they're staying ;)
LOFT Striped Top - originally $54.50, on sale $34.33. This top is all of my favorite things and so comfortable - definitely a great purchase for the summer! I may or may not be wearing it as I write this.
J.Crew Factory Tee - $14.50. I've always loved J.Crew's tees for their amazing quality at a low price point, but their Studio Tee (my go-to) always feels a little more formal. This version is perfectly broken in and comfortable. I suggest going up a size or two in these as they typically shrink.
LOFT Travel Wrap - originally $49.50, on sale $26.73. I shared this scarf/wrap here and really, it is basically the perfect summer layer.
LOFT Striped Shirt Dress - originally $79.50, on sale $42.93. I also thought I would return this dress - I initially ordered it in a Tall and it was just too oversized and shapeless. But then I sized down and got the regular length, and with a different belt it's really cute. I'll definitely be choosing it for work and the weekends this summer.
J.Crew Factory Beaded Necklace - originally $49.50, on sale $20.00. This was definitely an impulse buy on the way to the cash register, and I actually haven't gotten a chance to wear it yet. The color is just so pretty in person I couldn't resist! I can definitely see pairing it with a little white dress this summer.
LOFT Embroidered Shift Skirt - originally $79.50, on sale $42.93. This skirt looks really short on the model so I was anticipating it being a weekend only piece, but in the tall it's actually long enough for me to wear to work! The embroidery is really pretty and I love the blue.
J.Crew Factory Gingham Dress - originally $69.50, on sale $33.60. Is it really annoying when people describe inanimate objects as their spirit animals? Because this dress might just be my spirit animal.
(not pictured) Coach Factory Pink Crossbody - originally $350, on sale $99.00, used giftcard $0. I don't buy a lot of designer bags, but when I do they had better be pink and on sale ;) You can see the bag here - isn't the color gorgeous? I basically couldn't not have it.

Total Spent: $270.50
Total Saved: $219.50, not including the bag

Whew, surprisingly under budget. Really, I thought I had gone way over. For next month I'm not shopping for anything in particular, but if another pretty summer dress catches my eye I probably won't say no ;)

April Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

I was doing great on the clothing budget this month. I wasn't shopping, and I wasn't even really interested in buying anything. And then.... LOFT and J. Crew Factory both had huge sales. And I blew it ;) Here's what I bought in April:

J. Crew Factory One Shoulder Seersucker Dress - originally $108, on sale $54. I was on the fence about buying this (mostly because I already own this pale pink one shoulder dress from last spring) but it is so beautiful in person that I had to keep it! The fit is really flattering, and the fabric makes it really different than the dress I already own - it's actually brighter pink stripes on white fabric, so it looks a lot different in person than online.
Gap Straw Circle Bag (keeps selling out, this one is similar at the same price point) - originally $49.95, on sale $38.96, used giftcard $0. I loved the little designer circle bag I snagged earlier this year so much during our trip to Charleston, so when I saw this one (and then saw that it was finally included in a sale) I immediately scooped it up. I just got the chance to use it for the first time over the weekend (because it felt a little silly pairing a straw bag with a wool coat) and it's so fun to carry - I'm definitely going to be using it all summer long!!
J. Crew Factory Pom Pom Shorts - originally $39.50, on sale $19.50. How freaking cute are these little pom poms?! I saw these and had to have them. I'm excited to have them as a comfy short option this summer - they're like the leggings of short pants haha.
LOFT Lacy Ruffle Cuff Tee - originally $34.50, on sale $20.70. This tee is cute and simple (something I'm always lacking in my closet) and perfect for pairing with fun shorts and skirts this summer.
Treasure & Bond Platform Wedge Sandals - $79.95. These sandals are surprisingly comfortable and easy to walk around in, and filled a sandal hole in my closet. They're currently sitting out next to my bed, just begging to be paired with that polka dot romper once the weather decides to cooperate.
J. Crew Factory Scalloped Cami - originally $54, on sale $26.50. I've honestly ordered at least 10 similar camis over the years trying to find one that would work, and always skipped this particular one because of the racerback. I finally decided to give this one a try, and it's love. It's fully lined so it isn't see through at all, and the straps are adjustable so I can make it work with my bust. I'm thinking about snagging the black now - or maybe hot pink ;)
LOFT Striped Button Back Swing Top - originally $54.50, on sale $32.70. I waxed poetic about this top yesterday, so let's just leave it at love, love, love, wrinkles easily, love.
LOFT Polka Dot Romper - originally $79.50, on sale $47.70. Yes, that's right, this is actually a romper!! And how freaking cute?! I love the vintage-y vibes, but the wrap top makes it sexy too. There's a little snap to keep the top together that absolutely did not work on me, but I very carefully snipped it off and now it's perfect (albeit at a slightly higher risk for a wardrobe malfunction ;)
LOFT Faux Suede Wrap Skirt - originally $69.50, on sale $41.70. So so cute in person, will be perfect for work!

Total spent: $322.75
Total saved: $196.70

Phew, I was convinced until I just did the math that I had gone way over this month!! That giftcard definitely helped ;)

As far as shopping in May, I'm mostly just searching for a new swimsuit for our trip to Florida in June (I ordered this cute striped wrap number, but it came in the mail earlier this week and is a little more boob-y than I'd prefer ;) and another spring-y top or two that would be appropriate for work as well as the weekend (read: covers both shoulders).

What were your favorite buys this month?

March Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

I did a lot of shopping this month. Like, a lot a lot. It just has hit that time where I'm so over sweaters (I've basically been rotating through the same four since January) and ready for spring weather, but Mother Nature hasn't cooperated quite yet. You had better believe as soon as it hits 60 degrees I'll be in full sandals and dresses (and then freezing my butt off). It's hard to pick a favorite because I love everything, but I'm particularly excited to get to wear this striped dress out and about. It's the perfect length - long enough for work but not doudy-feeling - and really flattering!

I did snag a few items in Charleston that I keep babbling about from The Impeccable Pig, but I am leaving them out here partially because I can't find them online, and partially because they were all birthday presents.

So here's the budget for March:

Sanctuary Cold Shoulder Top (also available in black, printed, and chambray) - originally $69.00, on sale $41.40. I was unsure of this top at first, but I love how soft and pretty it is paired with white for spring and that it gives the cold shoulder trend but lets you still wear a regular bra. I wore it on our trip to Charleston here.
J. Crew Bow Heels - originally $218.00, on sale $130.80. These are SO freaking cute in person - a little extra, but what's a bow-loving girl to do?! The heel is really high though - like, somehow even higher than they look - so these are really an event shoe for me, or for a "cabs only" day haha. Probably not a problem for you gals who drive everywhere, but I'm usually on public transit and don't want to ruin my feet for the day just walking to the train!
J. Crew Factory Striped Dress - originally $52.00, on sale $27.50. Just loved on this dress above, so yes, it's basically the best. I would wear it dressed up (maybe with the bow heels!!) or dressed down with flat sandals and a denim jacket. Oh and I actually got a price adjustment on this! If you ever see a price drop a few days after you buy something, just find their customer service email or live chat, send them your order number and ask for the price to be adjusted. It's super easy, and in this case I got $9.50 back!
LOFT Essential Tank - originally $14.50, on sale $8.70. This is obviously just a layering piece, but I realized I had a hole in my closet (actually when I was planning this outfit) and had to fill it. Not the most exciting thing to shop for, but I've been wearing it all the time!
LOFT Ruffle Skirt - originally $69.50 on sale $41.70. I also realized I barely had any skirts in my closet and wanted to find some new ones for spring! This one is darling in person.
LOFT Tweed Skirt - originally $59.50, on sale $35.70. Another cute little skirt for spring that has a little hint of pink in it, and I love that there's a little flare out at the bottom. I would pair it with almost all of the tops I got this month. This one runs really big - usually I'm a 14 in skirts at LOFT, but I had to size down to a large tall in this.
LOFT Lace Top - originally $59.50, on sale $32.97. This top is so beautiful in person and incredibly flattering. Just know that it does not come with a cami underneath so you'll need your own.
J.Crew Striped Ruffle Sleeve Tee - originally $49.50, on sale $29.70. This tee is so cute in person, and the perfect heavy weight. I'd love to pair it with white shorts this summer for a fun nautical or Americana look, or with high-waisted jeans until the weather warms up. (Although I can't actually buy high-waisted jeans - even mid-rise jeans go above my belly button! It's like I was born ahead of the high-waisted trend haha).
J. Crew Factory White Shorts - $49.50, on sale $34.65. These are my ride-or-die, wear anywhere, all-time favorite shorts. They were a repurchase after I wore my last pair to the ground - I've worn them basically daily for the past four or five summers in a row. They have just enough stretch to be super comfortable but still flattering, aren't too short, and aren't see through.
Ten Sixty Sherman Bell Sleeve Tee - $30.00. Every spring/summer I find myself wishing I owned more white tops to pair with fun skirts and bright scarves, so I decided to get ahead of that wishlist and add this to my cart. It is the teensiest bit see-through, but I wore it last week with a nude bra and thought it was fine. It also comes in black, and I'm really considering snagging that one too!

Total Spent: $413.12
Total Saved: $257.88

Whoops, over budget! And I had myself totally convinced this month that I was fine - guess I forgot about buying those killer heels!

So next month I'll obviously be looking to reel things in a little, but still will be looking for more skirts. I'm also on the hunt for a new pair of basic sandals. I've been wearing the same two pairs for the past three summers now, and I noticed in Charleston that they're starting to look a little worse for the wear.

Happy shopping!

February Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

I'm basically always shocked when it comes time to write these posts. February is over, what?!

This month I was clearly excited about the trip we took to Charleston over the weekend, and my shopping was in full spring break mode. Despite repeatedly telling myself that I didn't need anything for the trip. The struggle is real.

That being said, I freaking love both of the dresses I got. They are so gorgeous in person. The yellow is so fun and I anticipate getting so much wear out of it this spring and summer. But I'm really psyched about this blue floral dress. It's not often I find a dress that feels like it was made for my body type, so when I find one I have to scoop it up. I wasn't sure where I would wear this to when I pulled it out of the box, but somehow in that week and a half I've gotten a baby shower invite, started planning a baby sprinkle, and have a potential spring wedding on the horizon. So yeah, I'm keeping it ;)

Here's everything I bought this month:

J.Crew Velvet Hair Bow (this is sold out, but here's a similar and less obnoxious version) - $16.50. I love how this dresses up a simple pony tail, but it isn't too crazy to not wear to work. Worn here.
J.Crew Polartec Pullover - originally $118, on sale $37.99. I love this little fleece - it is so freaking warm!! Just a note that it is a little cropped, so if you have a longer torso it probably won't work for you. Worn here.
Target Sandals - $12.99. These are super comfy and so inexpensive - considering getting them in brown too. Definitely going to be a go-to once it warms up here in Chicago.
Old Navy Graphic Tee - originally $14.99, on sale $11.24, used giftcard $0. This is super similar to a couple of graphic tees I loved a few years ago, and I just had to have another.
BaubleBar Earrings - $38. I've wanted a pair of white statement earrings since last spring, so I was psyched to come across this pair. They're super lightweight and not too big.
Maggie London Gingham Dress - $128. Love love love love love. Love. I want to wear this every day of my life.

Total Spent: $401.48
Total Saved: $80.01

Whoops. $50 over. Not mad about it, because I love everything.

Next month someone better hold me back from all of the spring arrivals though.

January Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2017 budget here.

We're here, the first budget post of the year! Are you excited? Let's dive in.

I approached this month as a low-spend month in an effort to build back up my bank account after holiday spending and our trip to Paris. I haven't bought any beauty products and am instead trying to use what I have stocked up, and have tried to be really thoughtful about any other (non-clothing) purchases. I thought I was taking the same approach to clothes, but apparently I still managed to go over-budget. What?! Part of the problem was me longing for spring break, part of it was all of the post-Christmas sales, and part of it was me being sick and spending a lot of time at home, bored, and on my computer. That being said, I'm pretty psyched about all of the new additions to my wardrobe. Here's what I snagged this month:

Old Navy Striped Sweater - originally $34.99, on sale $27.99. I love, love, love this sweater. It is so freaking cute and cozy. I just wish I had cooled my boots a little - I was really worried it would sell out, and so I bought a regular large. I really could have used that tall! So that's something to keep in mind for the future, although I love it so much I don't really care. Seen here.
Lilly Pulitzer Ophelia Swing Dress - originally $178.00, on sale $69.00. I snagged this during the Lilly Pulitzer After Party sale after New Year's, and I have to say, I like it, but not nearly as much as the LWD I scored last year. This one just doesn't seem quite worth the price tag, even on sale. It is cute, but I think I'm going to be more careful shopping their sale from now on.
Panacea Ball Drop Earrings - $28. These are so cute in person, but a word of warning, they're actually more neon than I thought. I used to be the neon queen though, so I'm not mad about it. I can't wait until it's seasonally appropriate to wear these!
Madewell Jeans - originally $128.00, on sale $48.99. When I was putting together my recap for 2016 post, I discovered my favorite jeans were back in stock in my size and on major sale, so I had to snag them. Very happy to have a pair of dark wash jeans with zero distressing / hem detailing for those days when I truly need a dressier jean.
Halogen Bow Back Sweater - $79.00. I saw this sweater and I had to have it, and I did not care that it was not on sale nor that it's more expensive than I would usually spend on a sweater. It's really flattering, it's surprisingly soft, and I love, I love, I love it. Seen here.
Steve Madden Clutch - $75. Something else I saw and had to have. Apparently I have a problem with self control. Anyway, it's somehow even more gorgeous in person, and I can't wait to bust it out on spring break.
Clare V Petite Alice Bag - $175, used giftcard $0. I talked about this bag versus it's larger size here, and I'm happy I went small. Plus, Jeff said "a bigger size would look weird." Thanks husband!
J. Crew V Back Sweater - originally $59.50, on sale $35.70. I had to snag this when it was on sale, and again, it's so good in person. The material is amazingly soft, almost like a fleece or sweatshirt, and it's really flattering. The v is a little deep, but nothing a little fashion tape can't fix.

Total Spent: $363.68
Total Saved: $218.81

So just a tinge over budget for the month, but not too bad. I do have to remind myself next month that the trip that we're taking to Charleston is only four days long and it probably won't even be warm, so I absolutely don't need to shop for new warm-weather stuff for the trip. Not that it's really going to stop me ;)
