How to Dress for a Chicago Winter

Coat (similar herehere, and here) - 1 Madison / Sweater - LOFT (a gift from Jeff's mom!) / Shirt - Old Navy / Leggings and Hat (similar) - J. Crew Factory / Socks and Boots - L.L.Bean / Bag - Tory Burch

Unless you're living in California or Miami, my guess is you've been experiencing some serious cold for the past couple of weeks. I grew up in the Chicago area and spent a lot of winters freezing. I remember walking to class in college and thinking my feet would fall off.

But really, the reasons why I was so cold? I wasn't dressed appropriately!! I mean, I used to wear flats every day, spent a whole winter in high school in just a peacoat, and would regularly skip hats to keep my hair looking good. Helloooooo!

Now that I've figured out what to wear, I don't even think it's really cold out unless it drops below twenty degrees, and I regularly find myself too warm when I'm out walking around. So what are my secrets?

It starts with the shoes. I spent a few years in Chicago without snow boots, and let me tell you, it was a mistake. I tried (fake) Ugg boots which were warm, but didn't work in snow, ice, or the giant slushy puddles that take over downtown in the winter. I love my Joan of Arctics for really snowy days, but they're a little too big and heavy for everyday wear. I picked up a pair of Bean boots this fall, and they have been serious game changers. I got the 8" sherling-lined pair (with the sherling insoles - omg so good), and they are freaking amazing. So warm and cozy, like Ugg boots, but waterproof and with great traction. They also aren't heavy and are easy to get on and off. I may or may not have worn another pair of shoes since Christmas.

To make your winter boots really work for you, you also need some cozy socks. I'm wearing camp socks here, but I've also been loving these wool socks from Bombas - I will actually do laundry more often to get these back in rotation.

And then, obviously (or perhaps not so obviously for high school Kristina), you need a serious coat. Your wool coats might be pretty and functional when it's in the forties, but when the temps start to dip below freezing, a puffer is where it's at. And you don't need a crazy expensive coat to stay warm either. I've had this coat since 2011 and it's still serving me well. What's the trick for finding a good coat for less? Shop now! Winter coats tend to go on their best sales in January and February, since that's when stores start to clear out their inventories to make room for spring and summer inventory. I bought my coat in January and got it for over half off. This exact style is no longer available, but here, here, and here are similar versions.

Finally, top things off with a warm hat that covers your ears. That's right, no cute berets or floppy wool hats. Grab yourself a warm beanie (faux fur pom-pom optional ;) and keep that heat in.

Oh, and not pictured? The giant scarf I wrap around the outside of my hood when we drop down below zero. Not cute, but it does the trick!

This Weekend...

This weekend I...

...had a little cold and spent a lot of time napping and watching terribly amazing television. Have you seen Floribama Shore? MTV was clearly trying to recreate the magic that was Jersey Shore, and while it isn't quite on the same level, it is still hysterically amazing, and one of the men even has gravity-defying hair.
...managed to make it out of the house for a Blackhawks game, which was the first one I've ever been to. I mean, I'm still not into hockey, but I am really into the food and the fact that the box we were in had a television with figure skating on it ;) Who else is ready for the Olympics?! Also, this.
...decided to give my bank account a breather after Paris and Christmas. I managed to leave a bunch of stuff in my Amazon cart, but couldn't say no to this bow-backed sweater. I mean, I'm not made of ice.
...cracked open Cravings for the first time (I got it as a Christmas gift) and let me tell you, Chrissy Teigan knows her stuff. Her take on cacio e pepe was freaking incredible.

I hope you had a good one!

Friday Finds

Happy Friday, and brrrrrr!! It's been so cold this week, so I clearly had one thing on the brain. My sweatshirt drawer is currently exploding so I've been holding myself back from buying that pullover - I keep seeing it on Instagram and it looks so cozy!

A Date Day in Lincoln Park

Coat and Hat - J. Crew / Scarf and Sweater - J. Crew Factory / Jeans - Gap / Booties - TOMS / Bag - Sezane / Necklace - Stella & Dot

Jeff and I have this habit of being really lazy on our days off (or, more likely, both spend too much time working!), and by the time we get our acts together we realize we missed the whole day. I was determined NOT to have that happen over Christmas this year, so I (maybe overscheduled) a little date day for us.

We started with checking out Christmas decorations in Lincoln Park, hot chocolate in hand. Let me tell you, we found some crazy houses. I know that one that we saw was the most expensive house for sale in Chicago, but honestly, a lot of the others in that area must be close in price. Like, these pictures for example, were taken in front of a crazy huge mansion. I kept asking Jeff when we could move in - ha!

Our next stop was Zoo Lights at the Lincoln Park Zoo. The last few times I've gone haven't been the best experiences, either because of crazy cold weather or huge crowds and terrible traffic jams because of too nice of weather. Seriously, my parents actually abandoned their car in the parking lot once because they literally couldn't get out of the lot. But I think I now know the trick - go when the weather isn't so bad, and arrive before Zoo Lights actually starts! We probably got to the zoo around 3:30 and got to see all of the animals with very few people around, and then went outside as the lights came on and got to enjoy before all of the crowds showed up.

After that, we walked up to Halsted Street for drinks and dinner at Oyster Bah. We'd never been before, and I was seriously impressed by the quality of the seafood, especially considering we'd just had one of the top ranked oysters in the world in Paris. Not that I have a fine enough palette to judge, but we were at least told we'd had one of the top ranked oysters in the world ;) Really, Oyster Bah was probably the best seafood I've ever had that wasn't from a beach town.

And then to cap the night off, we went to a wine and paint class at Bottles & Bodega. I've done a couple of these before with girlfriends (and attended ladies night once ;) but Jeff had never been before. I always find the painting fun and relaxing, and heck, who doesn't love a couple glasses of wine?! Now we just need to figure out what to do with two semi-decent paintings of the Chicago skyline...

It was pre-Christmas, but I was trying not to go too Christmassy with this outfit - I actually had a different hat and bag picked out, but ended up not liking the combo, so we somehow wound up with this. All of the red and green. But you can pretend, right, that my holiday style is still relevant to your day-to-day? Please?

December Budget

Every month I post about my clothing budget. My budget per month is $350, which may seem like a lot to some and a little to others, but feels just right for me. You can read my thoughts on my 2016 budget here.

This is one of the first years I didn't do a ton of shopping for myself in December. Usually all of the Black Friday madness sucks me in (online of course) but we were actually flying to Paris on Black Friday this year so I didn't do any shopping (except for this tee, which I bought in the airport after seeing it on someone's Instagram ;). Then when we got back, all of the sale emails were a little overwhelming so I basically stayed away. In fact, I really only bought three items in December (and all from Abercrombie), because that black dress was actually purchased back in October (I intended to take it back but then couldn't). Of course, I did also snag this bag for myself in Paris, but I'm leaving it out of the budget and counting it as a Christmas present instead. Because it's my budget and I can do what I please ;)

So here's the damage for December:
J.Crew Factory Plaid Elephant Tee - originally $39.50, on sale $19.50. Because obviously I needed this for the holidays - worn here.
Abercrombie V Back Sweater - originally $58, on sale $34.80. Okay, so I haven't shopped at Abercrombie since high school, and even then it was usually because my grandma bought me something from there for Christmas and I returned it and then had some store credit to burn. Back in about 2002 my brother and sister used their store credit to buy matching military surplus jackets and then wore them to death. Too bad it wasn't 2012 because then they would have been totally in ;) Anyway, I really just wanted the pullover but needed to add a few more items for that sweet, sweet free shipping, so this sweater got tossed in. And I freaking love it - so soft, the deep v in the back is a fun detail, and the fit is perfect.
CeCe Velvet Shift Dress (the velvet is sold out, but here it is in crepe and here's a similar velvet dress) - $128. I bought this back in October thinking it would be fun for the holidays but wasn't sure I was actually going to keep it. I ended up packing it as a just-in-case dress for our Paris trip and had to wear it - it's so pretty! I actually ended up wearing it for our photo session in Paris.
Abercrombie Velvet Lace Cami - originally $38, on sale $19. I don't usually go for tank tops because they mean strapless bras, but this was so pretty (and cheap!) I couldn't resist. It's funny, because back in the day I remember thinking of Abercrombie as so expensive. Anyway, I ended up wearing this under a big cardigan for New Year's Eve - perfect!
Abercrombie Asymmetrical Snap Popover - $68. The big kahuna. I've actually had this on my wishlist since it came out earlier this fall, and then it sold out. They brought it back in time for Christmas, and I was so excited I didn't even care that it wasn't on sale. It is so, so worth it, especially in this crazy cold we've been having. The fleece is incredibly plush and warm, and it turns out it's long enough that you can wear it with leggings. Definitely a win!

Total Spent: $269.30
Total Saved: $62.20

And that's a wrap for the budget for 2017! I think I managed to stay under overall, but I haven't actually done the math yet so we shall see - I'll have a full recap of the year coming at you next week.

Favorite Outfits of 2017

I might be crazy here (or it might be the below-zero temps we experienced last week - brrr!!), but I think my favorite season for getting dressed is actually late spring/summer. NOT FALL. What?! Okay, but hear me out for a second. I love the layers, I do, but I think I like white jeans and bright colors and fun shoes and wearing what you want without worrying about frostbite and windchills better.

I was trying to pick out my favorite outfits of the year, and seriously, I'm pretty sure I picked about two months of posts from April through June straight. Spring, I've got you on my radar ;)

Here are my favorite looks from 2017 - each image is linked back to the original post.
